
- The Valley of Kashmir was once the great lake Satisar.
- The Kashmir valley was first incorporated into the Maurya Empire and then into the Kushan Empire.
- The term was first used in an official document in 1795.
- Kashmir was invaded in mid 12th century by the Muslim Turkish army.
- Turkish rule ened when the Mughal ruler Akbar invaded Kashmir in 1586, led by Hindu King Bhagawant Das and his aide Ramchandra I.
- After the battle, Akbar appointed Ramchandra I as the governor.
- Ramchandra was the ancestor of the last Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir Hari Singh.
- It was part of the Mughal Empire and was annexed by British India in 1846.
- Muslims constitute about 95% of the state's population.
- The Jhelum River is the only major Himalayan river which flows through the Kashmir valley.
- The state economy is mostly dependent on farming, animal husbandry and tourism.
- The state is also famous for saffron and wood which is used to make high-quality cricket bats.
- Before insurgency intensified in the Valley in 1989, the state economy was tourism-driven.
- The Army has been deployed in huge numbers to check infiltration and insurgency.
- The state has been depicted in films as well –Mission Kashmir, Roja, Hero-the love story of a spy, Dil Se, Yahaan and Tahaan.
