- Rajasthan has been the home of Rajputs—a martial community who ruled over this area for centuries.
- The Chauhans were a dominating force in Rajasthan till the 12th century.
- The British occupied it in 1820.
- After the Chauhans, it was the turn of the Gehlots to gain prominence.
- Apart from Mewar, the other historically prominent states were Jaipur, Bundi, Kota, Bharatpur and Alwar.
- All these states accepted the British Treaty of Subordinate Alliance in 1818, protecting the interest of the princes.
- With the introduction of provincial autonomy in1935, agitation for civil liberties and political rights became stronger in Rajasthan.
- The various states came under a single umbrella with the promulgation of the States Reorganisation Act between 1948-1956.
- The present state of Rajasthan came into being in 1958 with the amalgamation of all smaller states.
