Can Ronaldo do a Maradona?
Like Pele, Maradona wrote his name among the legends of the game on the most demanding stage of all, the World Cup.
The 1986 finals in Mexico, where he almost single-handedly guided Argentina to glory, represented the high point of a career steeped in both brilliance and controversy.
Maradona's five goals in 1986 World Cup came with his utter brilliance along with a pinch of luck. Who would have thought the little magician will score a crucial goal against England with a hand, which he later stated as 'Hand of the God'.
The 1986 World Cup winning Argentina squad was not that great but Maradona single handedly helped Argentina lift the biggest prize in sports entertainment.
Similarly this time around, Portugal does not have that great a team, but what they have s one of the best players in the world in CR9 (Cristiano Ronaldo). It will be fair to say that this man can do those things with the ball that can astound you, to say the least.
He is a real crowd pleaser and an entertainer and above all the player has the quality to score goals from anywhere on the pitch and even make goals for the forwards.
Portugal struggled to qualify for the World Cup but still this team is currently third in FIFA standings. They do have match winners like Deco, Nani, Simao, but it won't be wrong to say that Portugal will be relying heavily on Ronaldo.
Ronaldo is a player who can score goals from both the feet, can dribble through defenders and can fool the opponent with his trickery and skills, I don't see anything that Maradona has done that Ronaldo cannot do.
The biggest hurdle for Portugal is their group of death. With Brazil, Ivory Coast and Korea DPR in their group, Portugal's first test will be to go through the group stages. Once they do so, the 2006 semi-finalist would be seen as one of the favourites to lift the title.
I agree Ronaldo hasn't had a great time since leaving Manchester United despite his heroics for Real Madrid, Lionel Messi showed the world that what Ronaldo can do he can do better. But what looks an ordinary squad can also is seen as bunch of guys who are ready to give their lives on the pitch.
If only Ronaldo can go easy on showboating and lead by an example, he is more than capable of doing a Maradona.
