The disunited colours of Gujarat

With all candidates having filed their papers, it time for the colour. And colour is there aplenty already. In the form of the profile of candidates. And this is how the pack of candidates looks like, as they slug it out until April 30. There's the famous danseuse called Mallika Sarabhai who dances along streets in Gandhinagar constituency, collecting funds for her campaign. There's an Independent candidate from Surendranagar who has declared assets worth a whopping Rs 514 crore, but regrets he can spend only a small fraction of that amount. There's a first-timer in Bardoli, who isn't sure whether to don `khaki' or the `khadi', as he's preparing for his Civil Services exam as well. And the examination is a day after the results. And then of course there are the regulars. Candidates who don't have just FIRs against them, but have been convicted in cases like narcotics....

Advantage Congress?

When votes were counted for the 26 Lok Sabha Seats in 2004, the Congress fold was a joyous lot. It had taken its tally from seven in 1999 to 12 in 2004. And wresting five seats out of a total of 26 was in itself, a huge success story - the best performance in close to two decades. In less than three months from now, the counting of seats will be done again. To be fair with both major political parties, each has about half-a-dozen seats that they are assured of a win, irrespective of who the candidate is. Like the BJP can't possibly lose the Rajkot seat in Saurashtra and the Congress is sure to win the Anand seat in Central Gujarat. It's those remaining dozen seats for which the real battle will be fought in Gujarat. The Congress appears better placed in the run-up to the....
