The Price of Inaction

Another Cong bastion falls to the BJP. Only the strategically blind or a die-hard Cong lover would have not seen it coming. There were all the ingredients ready to make BJP the single largest party in the elections,,if not given them an outright majority - JD(S) playing greed politics with both camps, Cong not even putting up a CM nominee rather playing with a pathetic divisive tactic of putting up disparate community figureheads. But more than all of this, i feel two issues have consistently thwarted Cong in almost all state elections in the last 2 years - Weak response to Terrorism and lack of economic reforms. Irrespective of what the LEFT may shout at the Cong/UPA that anti-people policies are hurting the Cong,,we see that even with all the populist NREGA, Farmer Loan write offs,,we still see Cong thumped out of power in states. The analysis is simple and something that experts stated looooong back - Populist measures are NOT election win tickets,,simply because the rural and semi-literate strata of the society that 'seemingly' is targeted for benefit by these schemes have no knowledge of who did what,,and how they benefit from it. It's paradoxical that a political party like Cong which harps on secularism and unity,, chases more and more disparate and broken vote banks in rural, caste specific and 'minority' areas rather than project a collective "nationalist" agenda as the BJP has been doing very well ever since it went out of power in the Centre. Cong has managed to grind all reforms to a halt. Reforms that benefit more people numerically in the medium to long term than hurt in the short term. It has managed to make India a virtual BULLSEYE to terrorists by repealing anti-terror laws. It,,shamingly,,being the largest coalition camp in Parliament,,effectively ceded power to the 3rd largest camp - The Left,,who incidentally care more about China than India.

What should the Cong's strategy for forthcoming elections be??

Simple!!!

Stop being in a state of fear-induced-paralysis and GET THINGS DONE. They're losing states and will pretty much lose the Centre as well. So rather than go out with a whimper,,get the N-deal done, get economic reforms rolling, show the citizens it's strict on terror and go out with a BANG. Who knows,,maybe the people will see all these actions and bring the Cong back in(gonna take a miracle,,but hey,,always keep your options open).

P.S: And before it is TOO LATE - Put the traitorous Left in it's place.
