Media and Parliament
(Full text of the Eighth Pranabesh Sen Memorial Lecture, on, 'Parliament, People and the Media', Kolkata, January 12, 2009) Distinguished Guests and Ladies and Gentlemen: I feel greatly honoured and privileged to have been invited to deliver the Eighth Memorial Lecture instituted in honour of one of the great Media personalities, Late Shri Pranabesh Sen. I heartily compliment the Pranabesh Sen Smarak Samiti for organizing this Lecture Series and I take this opportunity to pay my respectful homage to his memory. Shri Pranabesh Sen belonged to the first generation broadcasters, who are credited with the very establishment of a sound broadcasting culture in our country. His command over the language and lucid style of presentation endeared him to millions of listeners. His inspiring commentaries during the 1971 Indo-Pak war boosted the morale and roused the passion of our jawans. He used his immensely popular programme, 'Sambad Parikrama'....




More about Somnath Chatterjee
Somnath Chatterjee, Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha, is one of India’s most respected politicians and a leading expert on the Constitution and Parliamentary convention. He began his political career in 1968 as a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Before entering politics, Chatterjee was a lawyer, trade unionist and a social worker. In 1971, he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time. Chatterjee has served on numerous Parliamentary Committees and has been a member of various governmental and parliamentary delegations. As Speaker, he introduced the concept of live telecast of Parliamentary proceedings. His conduct of the proceedings of the House during the trust vote on 22 July 2008 earned him widespread appreciation and respect.
