A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips
...And this is not a cliche anymore...
Wolfing junk food like burgers, pizzas, pastas, fried chicken, and washing it down with can-loads of cola ?
Well, that's a known recipe for disaster and for all the mouth-watering and finger-licking lure, here's the shocking findings from a research conducted in Oxford University.
People can put on weight on their waistline within three hours of eating fatty food!
So whenever you feel you can't breathe properly after a heavy meal, or have to loosen your belt, it surely is not a temporary sign!
A landmark study published in the Physiological Reviews, done by Fredrik Karpe and Keith Frayne, Professors of Metabolic Medicine at Oxford University, found that fat from food finds its way on your waistline, within three hours of a heavy meal.
The science of weight gain has always been more complicated than people think. For one, experts mostly thought that weight gain is a gradual process. Food travels from the gut into the blood where it is used by muscles and the excess is stored as fat over the years.
But this research is busting that notion. Karpe and Frayne conclude that fat from food moves quickly around the body in the bloodstream before being "caught" and "stored".
In a press statement, Karpe, one of the co-researchers said: "The process is very fast. The cells in the adipose tissue around the waist catch the fat droplets as the blood carries them and incorporates them into the cells for storage. If you eat too much, you don't get into this phase of starting to mobilise it. There will just be constant accumulation and you will start to put on weight. But this fat can easily get burnt with regular workouts."
Millions of us binge on pizza so often. A standard non-veg pizza at Dominos, has around 30g of fat!
So according to this study, each time you gulp a pizza, 3 teaspoons of fat, enter the bloodstream an hour after being ingested and can be added to your waistline, much quicker than previously thought!
And if you continue to over-eat after that, the fat gets moved into tissue around the hips, rear and thighs for storage.
Moreover, people who stuff themselves during dinner time, are likely to store more fat!
The statistics are scary... 1 in 5 urban Indians is obese. Obesity has silently become a bigger public health threat than malnutrition for the country.
So even if you reach home late after work and junk food is a call away, remember that fatty food will turn into flab within 3 hours!
