Guilty pleasures of Bollywood surprises

"How can one make such movies?" I overheard someone complaining.

Everyone has his or her biases, only mine got shattered two days back. This was after I watched the movie Singham. Frankly I expected to come out of the movie hall with a headache. To my utter surprise I came out with a smile.

Let me first explain my bias.

In simple words I used to think movies like these where you have a superhero serenading you (including Chulbul Pandey's Dabangg ) were just noisy, meaningless display of audio and video, dispersed with generous does of South-Indian-movie-style action sequences. Singham though is slightly different and is not an out an out comedy. It has serious stuff in it too.

But still a far cry from what we call 'meaningful' cinema. Those with a stronger opinion than mine would scream aloud saying Bollywood is hijacked by filmmakers wanting to make some quick bucks. Statistically and quite unfortunately, only a few socially relevant, realistic movies get their due credit and applause

But after the Singham experience I definitely want to straighten my line of thought. Agreed these movies have a very random storyline, slapstick humour, and equally silly one-liners but they succeed in doing exactly what they are meant to do - entertain.

For just those two odd hours you leave all your problems behind and bury yourself comfortably in those push back chairs and laugh your heart out. The masses love to do that. The noise these movies generate at the box office says it all.

As my friend once said, "After a hectic day at work you don't want to watch movies that harp on corruption, injustice, about the way we DON'T live our life or simply remind us of things we would rather love to forget. We have enough worries in our lives as it is to deal with more stress."

Some may agree with my friend, some may not. To each his own.

As for me I am waiting to get another overdose of Salman Khan in the soon to be released Bodyguard. Will he have a better one-liner than "zindagi main teen cheez kabhi underestimate nahin karna: I, me and myself!"

Let's wait and watch.
