City of Dreams
Words almost seem pointless at times like these, but it's the only way to try and make sense of what is happening to Bombay now. And I say Bombay, at the risk of being politically incorrect, because that is the city I grew up in and know and love.
These things don't happen in Colaba, we thought. Certainly never at the Taj and the Oberoi and Leopold's -- places where you met friends, lovers and royalty. They were safe havens, cosmopolitan, vibrant, alive. Coffee at Sea Lounge or beer at Leo's was usually the after hours plan for many. Watching the Taj burn, I, like many others, choked up. As I write, the nightmare continues, for the hostages, victims families and everyone watching on. Back in the news room, it's just as edgy, with reporters and producers working round the clock.
Is Bombay safe any more? Or is it ticking off its nine lives? And like that feline, expected to land on its feet somehow. Again.
