DU sets up panel to develop curriculum for 4-year degree programme

The course apparently includes - in the first year - two semesters of basic courses which are the same for all students enrolled. In the second year, students may choose a particular discipline and at the end of the second year, they can opt out of the course with an associate degree. In the third year, students continue with their chosen subject along with concurrent papers. If they opt to exit at the end of third year, they get a general degree. In the fourth year, students have a choice of continuing the studies in the chosen discipline or take up a research project. Upon completion of the fourth year, they get an honours degree. Talk to Professor Malashri Lal, one of the brains behind this, about the logic of this proposal.

  • Ma'am, cant we start evaluating people by their skills, intellect, their real life experiences, real time knowledge they have? Or in India, we still want to follow this rule: age:22-graduation; age24-PG; 28 either Phd or exp. etc. Means we should start looking beyond this year gaps and paper qualification. Soory if i am wrong! Asked by: pc
  • Yes, you have a point. The proposed degree programme will create room for skill development, real life problem solving through guided projects, innovation ideas and a lot else. With exit points in the programme, students can choose the level they wish to reach.
  • Hello Mam, In what disciplines will these courses be offered. Also suggest you to plan for a 1 year advanced degree involving a project for professionals. Asked by: Saurabh
  • The disciplines on offer now will continue to feature but the configurations may be different as we must keep contact with the new knowledge that is appearing all around us. The proposed degree programme will have project work within it, as also internships where required. So yes, students will interact with professionals and mentors.
  • Dear Ma'am, its not a related question. But could you clarify which degree is recognizable. As we have UGC, AICTE, DEC,IGNOU, State level, HRD, territorial Univ. etc. And all have authority to permit anyone. Yet every one come out and say, if the degree is not recog. by us, its invalid and void throughout world? Please Asked by: pc
  • Please be assured that a degree awarded by the University of Delhi is a recognised degree. This is a major university with an excellent track record, highly regarded by all institutions.
  • On what grounds is this proposed curriculum better than the prevalent system? Don't you think its unfair for students who would be awarded a honours degree in 4 years opposed to students previously from DU who got a degree in three years only? Asked by: Kandarp
  • The proposed curriculum is based on integrated principles of learning. It is better than the existing model in the sense that students will have core subjects, interdisciplinary knowledge and a wider choice of areas. The plan is student-centric. The 3 year and 4 year programmes work differently.
