On South Mumbai traditional eats

- Hi Kalyan, which South Mumbai food experience would you recommend for guests (Indian or foreign)? Asked by: jaywalk
- well the essence of South Mumbai to me is it's history. Of course you have some of the best of modern Mumbai there....but that's not intrinsically Mumbai...if I was to recommend a spot to a visitor it would be ambling down Fort on a working day...the hub of the commercial capital of india..strolling down Colaba in the evening...and at night heading to Bohri Mohalla belwo the JJ Flyover
- Where can I can get the best Malvani food in south Mumbai? Asked by: Omkar
- I have not come across too many Malvani restaurants in South Mumbai. The seafood scene is dominated by the Mangalorean joints there - apoorva, mahesh, trishna, bharat excellensea...Pradeep at Fort is a good option for Malvani in the afternoon...else head to Dadar near Sena Bhavan for the Malvani legends such as Gomantak, Sindudurgh and the relatively new Chaitanya from Malvan
- What do you think of Bade Miya and Ayub? The former is overrated, in my opinion. Also, any interesting/hidden food places you've discovered around the south? Asked by: ceejay
- I find Bade Miya to be over-rated too...been there in my early years at Mumbai but haven't gone back in 6,7 years now...yet to try Ayub...went there once on a rainy day but it was shut then. IMO the ultimate meat experience at Mumbai is at Bohri Mohalla...Haji Tikka for kebabs, Valibhai's for the baara handis
- Which restaurant serves good Nahari? Asked by: Anoop
- Gallops at the Mahalxmi Race Course has a fantastic nalli nihari and a great view too If you are fine with grunge eating then head to vallibhai payawallah at bohri mohalla. You get bara handis there and one of them is the nihari...where, you get the marrow, scooped out for you, and put into a curry of a mix of 9 daals which have been slow cooked for 6 hours...this is the ultimate meat experience at mumbai...the landmark is chor bazar below jj flyover
- What are some of the best Bombay sandwich joints in SOBO? Asked by: Anurag Mehrotra
- the Bombay sandwich is my favourite local street food option...I prefer the handheld grill ones...frankly any of the guys on the streets of Mumbai is good. I used to quite the like the ones Dipu used to make. He sits outside Laxmi Building at Fort. I would often stop there on the way home when I worked there. I prefer the toasted ones to the saada ones. Don't skip the butter, chutney and red sauce topping
- What do you think of the seekh kababs at Sarvi (Nagpada)? Are these similar to the galouti kabab? I would have preferred them spicier, myself. Asked by: Anoop
- I really love the seekh kebabs at sarvi...yes they are similar to gulauti and kakori in texture...frankly I find the spice levels to be right...that way the spice doesn't overpower the meat. Question of personal preferences I guess. I strongly believe that spices should compliment meats or fish and not dominate them...the former requires more skill. So thumbs up to Sarvi
- Do you have any suggestions for Goan food? Please don't say Martin's; the food is, at best, mediocre. Asked by: jaypee
- you could try Snow Flake near Metro cinema....home styled Goan food. A very sleepy place...not sure if it is open at night
- What is a good place for chats? Asked by: foodie
- I am not a big fan of chaats at Mumbai and I am guessing that saying 'Lucknow' is not an option! In which case Girgaum Chaupatty perhaps...get a bit of the seaside experience on the side. Though I hope it is not like Juhu Chowpatty which is the most commercial place to eat at Mumbai and devoid of any soul Another great chaat experience would be outside Churchgate station...the precision with which they feed so many people is amazing...I would often have sev puris there when I used to work at Nariman Point and take the train home from Churchgate
