The CERN quest to find Higgs boson or God particle

This chat is over. Thanks for joining.
  • Sir, can you please explain what is this God particle? Asked by: UTSAV DATTA
  • God particle is actually a name given to Higgs boson by Nobel Laureate Leon Laderman. This particle is actually a bosonic particle first predicted by Peter Higgs, hence Higgs boson.
  • Is there any contribution of Indians in Higgs boson or God particle ? Asked by: Mira
  • Yes, there are about 30 physicists and equal number of research scholars from various institutes including Delhi University contributed in the discovery of Higgs boson.
  • Why discovery of God particle is important? Asked by: Satyendra
  • It explains how other particles like electrons, protons, etc. acquire mass.
  • As i understand this has got to do with something of a sub atomic particle. Does this findincrease the chances of increased Nuclear conflicts ?? Asked by: sundar1950in
  • No, no at all.
  • Hello Please tell about the God particle which was found Asked by: sai
  • Its one of the particle predicted by the standard model (SM) of particle physics which deals with all the know particle and unifies all the forces (except gravitational force. Higgs particle was the only missing link in SM. This particle was supposed to provide mass to all other particle and hence has a very significant role. By not having Higgs boson, we wouldn't know how the particles acquire masses. But now that Higgs boson (or like) has been discovered so now we know.
  • Why did the scientists name Higgs Boson got out and God particle nomencalature got stuck ?? Asked by: sundar1950in
  • Higgs boson - Its a bosonic particle i.e. obeys the Bose-Einstein statistics and was predicted first by Peter Higgs, so called as Higgs boson. God particle is the nick name given by Leon Laderman in one of his books.
  • If the finding of Higgs boson is anounced, what is it's significance to sceintists and to the common man?? Asked by: sundar1950in
  • It significance is enormous in terms of our understanding of the universe and how things work together. We now know how particles acquire mass. This one finding takes us into new era of seeking knowledge. For its practical implementation, we need to more research and patience.
  • Kindly put in simple words and make me understand, a lay man, as to what is higgs Boson or God's particle. Asked by: sundar1950in
  • see my answer to sai.
  • What is Higgs boson or God particle? How it will be helpful to Humans? Kindly tell us in layman's language. Asked by: Neel Shah
  • See my previous answer to sai and sunder1950in.
  • Hi, Can scientists now authoritatively challenge world religions about the kind of God in their scriptures? Would this discovery remain just as an exercise to prove a fact or are there any long term implications? Asked by: Abhiram
  • This discovery has nothing to do with God as such. God particle is just a misnomer given to Higgs boson. Finding this particle would not refute the existence of god or not finding this particle would not have proved the existence of god.
  • Sir, do you think the current SM of particle physics is now complete and this will help accelerate research in other domains of physics and answer other imp questions of Physics. I'm a physics grad student and wanna work on Dark energy, Asked by: Keshava Prasad
  • Yes, with Higgs boson findings the SM of particle physics is complete. But as we know that SM of particle physics is not able to explain everything so now we need to focus on the physics beyond standard model and look for its hints.
  • Do you think with the finding of Higgs Boson it will help find answers to other imp questions in Physics like Dark matter and energy? Asked by: Keshava Prasad
  • The finding of Higgs boson will not directly answer anything about the dark matter or energy but yes, it will help in the long run.
  • There has been a recent discovery of a 125 GeV gamma photon from the inner galaxy using 3.7 years of Fermi-LAT data what are the chances of ATLAS and CMS to detect the same instead of the Higgs boson coincidently in the same energy range. Asked by: Bhargav
  • The chances are extremely rare, in fact close to impossible. The higgs particle is searched in the signatures which are completely different than that of 125 GeV photon so there cannot be any chance for this.
  • Science and Religion, never saw eye to eye as both contradicted each other in many issues. By finding this Higg's Boson, who do you think gained the upper hand? Asked by: Karthik
  • First, I do not think Science and religion contradicts each other always. Yes, there are instances where religion and science does not speak in the same breath but that doesn't mean that they refute each others existence. So, finding of Higgs boson doesn't change the relation of religion and science at all.
  • What is the role of Higg's Boson in Big Bang? Asked by: Karthik
  • Higgs boson is responsible for providing the masses to each and every particle after the big bang. This is the reason we see mass all around.
