Is the Indian healthcare system equipped to deal effectively with epidemic-like situations? | Read Story

The Swine Flu attack has exposed India's vulnerability in dealing with epidemic-like situations. It has also shown that the Indian healthcare system needs a serious overhaul in order to deal with emergency conditions. While government healthcare units try to grapple with a lack of resources and facilities, the story is no different for private ones which charge hefty fees for diagnosis and are often not trained to deal with emergency-like situations. Should the Government rope in more private players to boost the healthcare system in India? Is the Indian healthcare system equipped effectively to deal with epidemic-like situations?

Dear Sir
Even after 62 years of Independence, when India is not at all geared up to face any consequence or situation, how do we expect that India is fit enough to effectively deal with any epidemics.

Thanks
Rgds

Health care system in India is so poor here, my experience of it was when i was in Bangkok in may 2009, the Epidemic of H1N1 was visible at the Bangkok airport, the airport authority there were very careful dealing with people coming from USA.As i landed in Indira Gandhi airport at Delhi, the custom people directed us to fill a form and get it signed from a group of people whom i presume were Doctors, just signing the form we were allowed to clear the custom desk. later i came to know that it was H1N1 checking, no physical or medical check but just filling the form was the Indian method of checking the Epidemic, God knows how many H1N1 infested Indian and outsider may have filttered in India with the Epidemic

Dear Mr. Shyamal,
Our system is quiet capable of handling an epidemic like H1N1,our medical infrastructure is enough to deal with it but its unfortunate to say that poor administeration and lack of interst in taking proper initiative is the main reason behind it. How can we expect our health minister to deal with H1N1 after his wonderful veiw /opinion /approach on controling population, its like overestimating someone who is not capable of doing the job.

regards,
dr.Nihal.
