Only charitable societies should be allowed to put up statues and that too in privately owned lands. There should be a PIL filed in the Supreme Court asking for a ban on errecting statues and memorials in public places by govt. or political parties.Let the Mahrashtra govt.make a trust in the name of Chatrapathi Shivaji with Rs.350 crores and carry out projects to alleviate the sufferings of Vidharba farmers.I have read reports from your correspondents in IBN live year after year about the unnending sufferings of farmers in Vidharba region. The politicians ruling that state should re-think on there priorities and realis that such grandoise schemes smacks of gimmikery,to put it mildly.

The ruling parties are unable to show any thing spectacular in the sphere of economic development.Ruling parties are using the emotional feelings of the people like Sivaji and Ambedkar ststutes to divert the attention of the people. In this line comes the changing of names of major cities and towns in to regional languages. This 350 crores can be spent on some irrigation projecta or construction of Pucca buildings for primary schools in villages of Mahrashtra.Shivaji will be there eternally in the hearts of all Indians.

It is sad that the state grappling with the worst drought in recent years and the Swine Flu pandemic has decided to squander away such an astronomical sum for a statue. This is nothing but plain politics being played out with state elctions less than 3 months away. I do not understand why the Govt seems to think that the people of Maharashtra would feel proud of the statue and as a reward vote back the Congress.
