The Internet has turned 40: has it made us losing our attention span when it comes to reading?

Has the magic of having everything at our fingertips, at the click of a mouse, affected our reading habits? What do you think?

As a voracious reader of books I disagree that the Internet has altered reading habits of people. Though during the initial days of the internet craze one did feel lonely at bood shops - but then this has indeed changed again. Do feel extremely happy to see a number of youngsters these days browsing thru a whole range books at book shops - where I am a regular. Would like to believe that the habit of reading books and as a consequence reading via any other medium will continue as hitherto irrespective of the internet.

The way internet has helped is by getting information at our finger tips. We now at least know what is available. However, when it comes to reading a book, I still rely on the good old hard copy. I like to feel the book in my hand and can take it along with me to remotest of places without stopping reading it.

Internet plays a very vital role in everybody’s life. Knowledge sharing, fast communication to the entire world are the key benefits out of it.
By internet you can easily communicate to any person across the world.
Many good books and literatures are available on internet so there is a fear of loosing reading habit as we can take a book every where with us a simple notebook and wireless connection can be easily carried.
GOVT should take certain steps to save books and of course to promote internet to be used by common man.

THANKS TO INTERNET THAT I CAN COMMUNICATE TO THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA & TELL MY PROBLEM WITHOUT 'CUTTING A TREE',I MEAN WITHOUT USING PAPERS !
AT PRESENT U CANNOT CONTROL WHAT U SEE IN A TV CHANNEL DESPITE MULTIPLE CHANNELS.SO IMAGINE A WORLD, BY USING AN INTERNET U WILL CONTROL THE CRAPS BEING OFFERED BY TV CHANNELS!
IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT COLLEGE/CLASSES;COLLEGE RAGGING ETC.
TV TO SOME EXTENT HAS CONTRIBUTED TO LITERACY;INTERNET WILL DEFINITELY CHANGE THE LEVEL OF LITERACY.
SO DEFINITELY OUR POLITICIAN WILL MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO STOP THIS PROGRESS OF LITERACY BECAUSE THEIR SHOPS RUN ON ILLITERATE MASSES.
I REQUEST THE PRESIDENT & THE PM OF INDIA TO GRANT FREEEEEEEEE INTERNET TO US!

Yes, internet has made us hugely dependent. whatever we want , we get it on the internet, People have stopped using their minds for even the very simple things, e.g. for projects, research materials, etc everyone is using it. No doubt , it has many uses but too much dependence on it has made us lazy and un intelligent (in some sense).

Reading ,talking,watching....these are all natural things and one can spend time availble in the area of interest.
There are people who talk more or may be watch more and it never means it's the fault of the Internet.
Internet is the only medium which provides everything, about everything and to everybody...
Now it's upto the user what he wants and for how long ?
Reading material is so easily available and being used to the best ever in the history of mankind.

No. With the use of internet we are getting the required information within no time. Ofcourse reading is a habit, likewise using the net is also one of the habit, it is upto you which you like more. In absence of of the internet ofcourse reading was the only option available to gain knowledge. Today with the use of the net we have one more option than reading. Certainly in presence of alternative options the percentage of the single option will come down,

How can the advancement of technology not have its down points/But even though the old practice of reading books has been adversely affected but things change with time.Books might even become history. It is just like the principle"survival of the fittest"and internet is definitely much more developed and improved than books and encyclopedia due to availability of unlimited and free information.and after all this is the era of technology.
