600 Air India pilots to go on strike: Is chaos ruling the aviation sector in India? | Read Story

There is trouble in the Indian skies and on the ground too. Even before the aviation sector could recover from the Jet pilots imbroglio of last month, it is the turn of national carrier Air India. Air India pilots have gone on strike after the carrier decided to cut their incentives. Flight have been cancelled , causing inconvenience to passengers. Is chaos ruling the aviation sector in the country? How can it be managed better?

YOU CAN"T GRUDGE THE PILOTS WHO ARE ON STRIKE. THE CORRUPT POLITICIANS AND THEIR CRONIES HAVE BEEN MILKING THE AIRLINES FOR DECADES.EMPLOEES CANNOT SUFFER TO ASSUGE THE INSATIABLE GREED OF THESE MAFIAS.THE DAY IS NOT FAR OFF WHEN NOT A SINGLE AIRLINE COMPANY PRIVATE OR OTHERWISE WILL SURVIVE IN INDIA.

civil aviation is not purely an essential services like health, civil supply(food)etc. it is more related to business and high class. But Its importance is sought at the time of natural calamities , security. So, our government should take prudent step before such situation arises. Government should keep himself alert after other private airline employees strike. Threatening them for legal sanction, is not wise. even it is not prudent to make a regulation to control such strikes. first settle the problem then think religiously to solve the problem.

To set the records straight, when it was boom time the pilots were raking the moolah, so when its recession time they got eat a humble pie. you cannot have it all be it sunshine or rains. what ever the private sector undergoes during recession should be applicable to others also. i feel that all the pilots jobs should be terminated as there is a glut of pilots in the market as of now or hire expats

Current Rating:

One thing must be understood. Strikes are not going to affect the Air India, but the common public. Air india is already loss making and will be willing to stop thier services in this pretext. I dont understand the logic behind some people supporting the Pilots. Are they not belonging to the elite class of people who are one of the most paid persons in the country? is it fine if the time, energy and money of some common traveller is affected due to this strike? Well yes, they have the right to demand but what Right are they having to disrupt the plans and schedules of other people (the status of the person who booked the tickets months before, the issue of refund or alternate arrangements is different matter here), for thier own selfish needs?

well they have very much the right to ask for their salries.. everybody has got that right be it a loader or a pilot..it is sad that people are suffering but isnt management equally or or rather more responsible for this mess

I wish to recommend actions to resolve the crisis.
Remove all bureaucrats from the management including the MD.They are the biggest problem creaters.Let the mgt be composed of board of directors with professionals.2.Stop bonuses/incentives till the AI starts making profit.3.It is unfair that exe pilots are paid less than the ones who are part of the union.Pay them same if not more.4.Reduce fares so that more people fly.Let the govt reduce taxes on aviation fuel.
5.Have synergy with other airlines. It is useless to fly two planes to the same destination with each having 50% occupancy. One can do the job.Saving for both airlines.6. Non profitable routes to be winded up.7.Allow more govt offrs to fly than go by train.8.IF NOTHING WORKS NATIONALISE THE AIRLINES AND PUT IT UNDER DEFENCE OF INDIA RULES(DIR) AND HAND OVER TO THE ARMY TO SORT IT OUT.

Its really not about aviation. Its about the power of unions. Unions have gotten so strong - in all sectors that they are just unwilling to compromise. Unions are good as they give workers a collective bargaining power against the management. However it has to be sensible. Read the news everyday and you will see some union from Bank to Insurance to Airlines to every Railways or Rickshaw or Taxi or municipality or .. going on strike because they want some additional benefits (even if the company they work for is in loss and cant afford it).
Most countries, there is a tribunal that mediates between union and management to make sure that both sides reach a amicable agreement. However in India unions dont even listen - when the court says strike is illegal. A few hold the whole country to ransom. The government is a mute spectator while the common man suffers.

Sir,

The Air-India Chairman and Managing Director is reported to have admitted that more than 50% of its flight, both national and international, have been affected due to the pilots strike. With the strike, more national and international flights are cancelled and more passengers are strandered at various destinations. The strike has caused undue inconveneance to the passengers. Air-India is reported to have incurring a loss of Rs.7000 crores a year, which works to an average of Rs.19 crores per day. The mismanagement in the Air-India has made the head of the Maharaja hang in shame. Recently the pilots of the Jet airways went on a strike in support of their demand for the formation of an union and the management yielded. Now the pilots of Air-India have resorted to go on strike. So the employees must understand the ground reality and negotiate with the management to bring the strike to end early.

If incentives have to be cut, then let it begin from the Minister himself. Even if he goes on strike there will be no problem. Don't antagonize the pilots and doctors and train drivers or even garbage collectors. They are more important than ministers and their undersecretaries.

Well, if the decision to step down the incentive was cast out of clarity and conviction, Air India management should not compromise on their stand.

I think the biggest danger to peace in any institution is when the stakeholders start searching for a peace formula.

Let the management stick to the stated position and wait for the wiser counsel to prevail upon the pilots.

I am shocked that our PM is getting involved in this muddle. He has better things to do I presume; unless he has been advised that the price of potatoes and onions will shoot up due the prolonged strike.

There is no substitute to dialogue and if this has to be drilled in, one must be willing to pay the price.

Some inconvenience to the elite class.....bound to be there sometimes we must ignore it and let the community put up with it.

It's high time the air of arrogance amongst Air India pilots was grounded.
