Have the selectors been hasty in axing Dravid from the ODI series against Australia? | Read Story

TimePosted by IBNLive at 06:06 PM, Oct 15, 2009 in Sports

Rahul Dravid was left out of India's 15-man squad for the first two games of the upcoming seven-ODI series against Australia on Thursday. Dravid, the only Indian other than Sachin Tendulkar to have scored 10,000 runs in both forms of the game, was omitted, at least from the first two games, from the Indian squad for the seven-match series against Australia commencing next week. Have the selectors been hasty in axing Dravid?

Yes, it was wrong the way selectors had handled Rahul Dravid. He has been one of the most successfull players for Indian cricket over the years and has earned the right to be treated with dignity.

The team management would like to go in with six batsmen an allrounder and 4 bowlers. When we think of Six batsmen for the team we have Sachin Sehwag gambhir yuvraj dhoni raina. with the return of sehwag and yuvraj the batting order is experienced enough to provide the required solidity. But i would have liked the selectors to persist with Yusuf Pathan/rohit sharma in the 15 atleast as they are good prospects for the 2011 world cup. It is sad to see Rohit waste the talent hez got, Hez been one youngster whoz caught the attention of all with the kind and grace and extra time he had to play his strokes. I hope selectors handle him carefully.

It is a sign of changing times that there isnt place for the kind of cricket dravid plays in the current playing eleven. One dayers have evolved over the years and 300 plus scores have become more of a norm. Chasing big targets had never been Dravid's strength and that doesnt make his acheivements over the years any less great, he has been very good when the batting conditions have been tough and the team needed to score at an easy pace, he is one person of whom we can be assured of a contribution.

In current times when 300 is more of a norm it is actually a liability, when one of your top 6 batsmen faces more than a hundred balls you expect him to pull you through the make the balls count, in case of dravid it has been a failure. The champions tropy match against pakistan had him struggle once the stroke players around him had fallen. Though dravid gives you the solidity he always needs a support from one of the stroke players to take the team home, this was fine in days when the 250-270 was a good score.

Selectors and BCCI should learn to be more professional in the way the handle senior players. It is unfortunate that the richest cricketing board had a lot lacking when it comes to professionalism.

1st of all selectors should not have called dravid for champions trophy. Rather,They should have selected some young players.
In my opinion, this selection panel do not have guts to select new players to international side as their predecessor did.
Especially, this panel just using the same players identified by the vengsarkar panel. The biggest mistake selectors did is bringing back munaf patel. He is never been played good cricket in both international and domestic matches. I do not know on which basis he has been brough back.

They should try to identify new potential and skillful players.because, talents in India are plenty. My request to Mr.Srikanth panel is to identify and bring the new young talented bowlers to the international side take some gutsy decision. Because , India's bowling never been upto the mark. Everybody likes to see Indian bowlers winning matches for India. Get the best bowlers for India.Bring New good and consistent fast bowlers to international side

Unfair decision from selectors.

If they called him for Champions Trophy at South Africa (difficult pitches) and his performance is OK in Champions Trophy then why he is dropped in relatively easy pitches in India.

He deserves better treatment from selectors because he is a very sincere crickter on his part.

this is not the first time indian silectors are making fun with such players who comes under all time indian greats.be it sunil gavaskar to mr. rahul dravid.its beyond doubt that he is always a performer in every format of game.he has been called in a very critical stage where the most vital players were injured.it should be noticed that after dhoni brigade's win in t-20 there is not many remarkable victory and whatever they won is depending on the 'useless unfit aged' players.so where the young players are ? and during this time Dhoni,no. 1 batsman in the world is batting not with the bat,now he plays with his pad.i can bet what dhoni has skills behind hte wicket, rahul dravid had more than that.how we can forget his excellent work behind the wicket in the last world cup.now mr. kohli ,who will even not come under top 30batsman in the world raise his shirt coller!!so now dravid should follow the foot step of Ganguly and announce retirement from both form of cricket if he wants a fairewell.

undoubtedly Rahul Dravid is a legend in Indian Cricket history, in fact he is a legend in history of cricket world. His records in one day and test speaks volumes of his talent which he has exhibited on the cricket ground. And if I am not wrong it was these selectors who gave him the name WALL.
My objection is not regarding his rejection from the team but the way he was axed is not acceptable. You select him for one series and reject for other, it doesn't makes any sense. its good that you are preparing for the world cup 2011 but the way you are treating your players( Rahul Dravid, Robin singh , V. Prasad) is not permisable. They have played for our nation and played well.
I think BCCI must reconsider its selection and rejection process.

Cricket or for that matter any game in India is top-heavey. The bureaucrats holding high offices in the game are more dominating than the players. Therefore they do no do justice to the game. Recently there was a report in the press that a tailor who has nothing to do with the game of cricket is on the governing body of the DDCA.

Firstly, it was a blunder on the part of the selectors to call him for the Champions Trophy. Since India was not performing the way it was from the past two years, selectors played safe by calling The Wall. It was obviously a defensive stance taken by the selectors in recalling Rahul Dravid. They wanted to get away from the criticism by the Media. Since that trick did not work, they omitted him from the current series.

I agree that we need younger players in ODI’s and also keep the future in view. But this is definitely not the way to treat a player of his stature. Our Board gets away with whatever it does with Dravid’s selection only because he chooses to keep quite.

BCCI should be ashamed of ill-treating someone who has always served Indian cricket in all forms of the games, in most critical situations and in the toughest conditions!!!

It is a hasty decision. If he was not to get a longer stint,he should not have been selected for the champions trophy in the first place.

Having selected in place of an younger player, he should have been continued till the end of Sri Lanka tour.

Now that Dhoni has also playing like Dravid, there is no necessity of having a player of his type.

Dravid should gracefully retire as the game requires quick movers and his advancing age will be a limitation.

How we wish that a great player like Dravid is treated with some dignity. He should be told that he will not be required in ODI'S anymore.

Rahul is never a one day or tt batsman.he fits for tests and only for that. The need to is to tell him th truth and make others like Badrinath play in the upcoming series to test them.

Performance is what should matter. There always comes a time when seniors must give way to youngsters. It is only a matter of time before other seniors will also need to make way for the youngsters sitting on the bench. Dravid should have been given the opportunity to announce his retirement gracefully instead of being left out in the cold via a public announcement. Like all other retired seniors Dravid can also go into commentating or becoming an expert on a TV channel to talk about the game. There is more talking about the game these days than on field performances.
