India@9: Rajdeep Sardesai asks, Home Minister P Chidambaram answers

TimePosted by IBNLive at 05:44 PM, Nov 26, 2009 | Updated at 09:14 AM, Nov 27, 2009 in Shows

Tonight @ 9, IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai will be asking Home Minister P Chidambaram how safe are we a year after the Mumbai carnage. Post your questions now. We will take them on CNN-IBN at 9 pm today.

Dear Rajdeep, I hope that you could put forward the following questions that linger in my mind to Mr. Chidambaram.

First, after the Mumbai attacks, when Narendra Modi raised and some others raised the issue to investigate "local help" to terrorists involved, it was out and right denied as non-existent. Now there seems to be some investigations in India about Rana and Headly being involved in conspiracy and if they received any help here. Why was it not investigated thoroughly earlier about some inside help to such well planned attacks before denying it outright?

Second, I believe that terrorists need a lot logistic support, a place to stay in a city for reconnaissance (Rajiv Gandhi assassins for example), the help of a hawala channel to pay for the logistics and etc. etc. Some people who for greed and financial gains (knowingly or unknowingly of terrorist links) abet terrorist acts. If fear of a tough jail sentence is shown as example, out of fear of punishment they might hesitate to provide help to someone suspicious. This can at least make the task of terrorists very hard to implement any of their plans easily and give time for the law enforcement agencies to act. Does the present Government think such a move or necessary or not?

To quote an example, half an year ago there was a news about a Delhi business man (last name Sharma, but I am not sure) selling medical supplies accused of illegally selling loads of materials to Jharkhand meant to be delivered to Maoists. A very strong action against such a crime would have sent a very strong message to passive supporters of terrorism to think twice. There was no follow up news of any action on it.

Third, in the build-up to the Mumbai attacks, several series of attacks took place but they were all pushed immediately to the back burner after Mumbai attacks. (For example, ATS chief Mr. Karkare was investigating the role of Hindu fundamental groups involvement in terrorist activity until he died and with him the news died) What is the progress in all those blasts prior to Mumbai blasts? Was anyone accused or are the conspirators still roaming free?

I have very high regards for Mr. Chidambaram as a strong Home minister who can send a tough message. I wish him all success.

Regards,
Sankaran

Ironically, after a year of 26/11, the safest person in India today is a Pak terrorist - Ajmal Kasab. Kasab gets perhaps more and muchy more protection than the President of India.
Rajdeep pl ask Chidambaram...how long does it take the trial to go on and on. Why cant we have a fast track court for such offences?

Mr.P.C.Chidambaram
just heard your shocking statement that you are proud of the fact that the legal systeam is taking so long to give punishment to Indias biggest Terrorist Ajmal Kasab!!!
Mr.Home Minister have you lost your mind?
Didnt you get goose bumps on 26/11/2008 when kasab was killing innocent people????
Forget about the countries safety...

USA has constituted the HomeLand Security and abides by it strictly to ensure safety of its citizens. Have we constituted any such policy at least as a fallout of 26/11 to ensure safety of our citizens? Do we have any crisis management plan that would be followed to handle any such incidents in future. Do we have any plans to provide compreshensive security plan? For example electronic survelliance using cameras are being incporporated to gather intelligence. Do we have any such implementation or plans for the same?

A simple thing is that in case any of us notice any suspicious object or activity; what number are we to call? Do any of us know it?

Lastly, how will we ensure that all this is done in a manner that is above board and doesnt get lip service only nor does it become a good way for the politicians and their connected contractors to make money.

mr. sardesai can you raise question about mr. singh's visit to usa that 26/11 happened in india not in us. america celebrate 9/11 every year and president vists every year. how we expect anything from any politician who has not loyal to country. this is rediculous.

Today, a year after 26/11, India will ask what has the govt done to ensure that 26/11 doesnt happen again? And the govt will reply that security scenario has improved n-fold, that we are a safer country now and that we'll get safer as the years roll by..

But the fact remains that we are as vulnerable to another 26/11 as we were a year ago and that nothing has changed. Optimism looms large and we are optimistic that change will happen. But we must first be the change we wish to be.

Your government spends crores on n-tier security for VVIPs but does it give a damn for even a 1-tier security for its citizens? Our coastlines are still unprotected, our policemen still carry outdated weaponry and are short of bullet-proof equipment. But the government is more interested in expenditure on stupid air exercises so that Pratibha Patil can feel some chill running down her ageing spine! Wake up sarkar, wake up. Wake up to reality.

Our intelligence systems need a major revamp, u need special training from FBI. Adopt a practical approach to national security rather than focus on political blamegames. City police need training from Scotland Yard, and our Cabinet of Ministers from ???? ( Anyone who gives an answer to this deserves a Nobel Prize! )

India says that we will not tolerate anyone encroaching upon our security. Why can then India not enter Pakistan and grab hold of Hafiz/Lakhvi when ample evidence is available on them?
But no, India will wait for Pakistan to act. We all know Pakistan never acts, Its India who has to, if u dont India, i'm afraid u'll keep waiting forever.

I appeal to the world community to take note that all terrorism emanates from Pakistan and world powers must unite to annihilate terror outfits flourishing in Pakistan.

And as far as our own government is concerned, i am afraid to say that governance is very very poor in this country.

I am not at all optimistic about the future, kyunki iss desh ka kuch nahin ho sakta, sorry but thats the sad fact.

I would like to first thank IBN Conversations for conduction an interview like this one. I was inspired by the last part of an Interview which Rajdeep had with P.Chidambaram. I completely agree that the people of "INDIA" should believe in Idea of India.

We should not let an extremists in the Country divide the Indian People. As P.Chidambaram said, the terrorists who are being trained by the group are ready to give up their lives in order to kill the innocent People. All we can do is to be ready for any unforeseen situations which take place in any part of the country.

There have been many improvement in our security measurements since 26/11. However, it is very difficult to identify when the terror attacks will take place in our Country as the internal anti-Indian groups help the organization who try attack India.

There are many things which are unsaid here...but I believe that the CHANNEL LIKE IBN Live will raise those issues and make awareness to the Indian People. Thanks again for an inspiring Interview which Rajdeep had with our "Potential Leader" Mr.P.Chidambaram.

Can we INDIANS get assured that these TERRORISTS won't attack INDIA again?

Is the government sleeping? What has this government done to heal the wounds of 26/11ATTACKS?

Respected Home Minister

May I bring to your attention that the rail wagons and trucks carrying petroleum products, including LPG, plying through our crowded cities are posing a security threat. These could be used by terrorists to committ mass murder. Just think about dozens of rail wagons carrying petroleum products exploding at railway stations or an LPG laden truck expolding at a city centre.

We should think like a terrorist, that we could out-think them. I don't know our police top brass is undertaking such an excercise; else we are again for surprises like 26/11 or 9/11.

We should stop crowding an area with policemen in the name of security, when we are facing severe shortage of manpower. At cricket matches officers crowd the venues with policemen, who just stand their watching the show. This is when a few policemen positioned on the boundary line facing the crowd can keep the crowd under control. This what Europeans do to check hooligans during soccer match. No special training is needed for such ideas; we just need to watch a soccer match on TV.

I feel, many of our IPS officers are not capable to think differently. They should be trained to think and act innovatively on security issues.
