CAT online test: Is India ready for online entrance exams or is it too ambitious?

CAT online test: Is India ready for online entrance exams or is it too ambitious?

TimePosted by IBNLive at 01:59 PM, Nov 29, 2009 in India

The computer-based Common Admission Test in around 50 centres across the country were rescheduled on Sunday to allow necessary repairs to be completed at the labs where technical glitches disrupted the exams on the first day.

I don't understand why the "End Test" and "NEXT" buttons are placed side-by-side. "End Test" button in general, will be at the top of the Screen. I have almost clicked "END TEST" instead of NEXT button many times .. but somehow managed by seeing properly before clicking it.

Online test is step in right direction. Every innovative move will have its own challenges. The solution is to overcome those challenges and not to discard the move.

Everything has to match.Once our country looks like a first world country, we can try these stunts and pull them off. Infrastructure, diligence, honesty, accountability = zero. What's the use of having up a posh air conditioned centre in the middle of a ditch, for the exam, when nothing else is in place???

IIMs are not ready for online tests yet. This year the level of difficulty of the question paper has gone down drastically. Its shocking that questions have been lifted straight out of CAT coaching institute materials. This doesn't test the actual aptitude of the students as many students remember answers to many questions and did not require solving them to arrive at the answers unlike in previous CATs.So put simply,if one remembers most answers he ends up solving more questions and one who may know the concept to solve the question but doesn't know the answer at the first glimpse of the question will spend at least 2-3 minutes solving it,and hence lose out in the race.
This is absolutely unfair. Moreover, questions getting repeated from slot to slot is even more shocking.People writing in the later days definitely have an advantage over those who have written in the earlier days because now they know how much to attempt, the weightage of various chapters in quants,DI,Verbal. What has the IIMs done to take care of this issue? Has Mr.Barua left everything on God?
These blunders can only be called MISMANAGEMENT BY THE PRESTIGIOUS MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE.

It is high time the IIMs and Prometric realized that there is heaven and hell difference between conducting CAT exam and conducting GRE/GMAT.
Their online server is ill equipped to manage the data of three lakh students.
Dont use the students as guinea pigs for your experiments. The exams should be taken in paper and pencil.Dont put the carrers of so many students in jeopardy because of your whims.

Till today the news is there is problem in the online test and students are facing problems.
The IIMs are in the least mood of damage control. On the contrary they are keen on carrying on the test as it is.They can afford to show this attitude because there is no interference from the Government. In the true sense the IIMs are displaying their autonomy.
If the CAT exam is allowed to proceed as it is,it will be adding another feather to the cap of the reputation of corruption our country enjoys.Definitely the Government is protecting Promteric instead of protecting students interests.

Surely CAT has failed the online test.
The apathy of the government and the media towards the sufferings of thousands of students is conspicuous by the lack of coverage of this problem in the last few days.
I doubt if Prometric has bribed the Government along with some news channels so that this issue gets sidelined.
I have the following apprehensions regarding this years CAT online test.
1)For consecutive four to five days candidates faced problems.Mr Kapil Sibal declared that the IIMs should decide. The IIMs decided to carry on with the test irrespective of the sufferings of the candidates They have a five year contract with Prometric and they will lose a lot of money if they cancel the test. Anything is possible in this country if you have absolute power.
2)Prometric seems to blissfully oblivious of the situation and is in a stage of constant denial. For them, nothing serious has happenned.
3)Prometric believes in the absurd expectation that no candidate will discuss anything regarding the exam pattern or questions after coming out of the exam hall. This is the height of nonsense. Lot of training institutes throughout the country have their own people who take the Cat year after year. They do it to get the pattern of exam and guide their students accordingly. This year these people have a tremendous advantage because CAT is spread over a period of ten days.On the first day itself the pattern of exam and the level of difficulty was an open secret.
4Lot of candidates had to stop midway or their exams got cancelled. They suffered but the flip side is when they are given another date they will come for the exam having full knowledge of the pattern and type of questions. What about the people whose college exams will clash with new date?
5)For many candidates, the computer was slow but according to Prometric records these people have SUCCSFULLY given their exam. They could have scored more. What about them?
6)Prometric must surrender and accept that it is not prepared for CAT.

An entirely different take on this ... is it possible that this is all made up, and the CAT admissions committee, as it does every year, has some surprise up its sleeves? Every year CAT has one big surprise element. Is their something in store for all of us? Although I completely empathize with the agony all CAT aspirants are going through, and understand this is no time for such comments, but then knowing the IIM's, I won't rule out this possibility. But if not, this is really unfortunate for so many hopefuls. As somebody pointed out, the committee may be in for some tough legal battles ahead.

The IIMs have a well-deserved reputation for being the best B-Schools in the country. A seat in the IIMs is desired by lakhs of MBA aspirants. This puts tremendous responsibility on the IIMs to ensure that students are given a fair chance to get into the IIMs â€\" not only should it be fair and transparent, it should also be seen to be so.
Till last year, when the CAT 2009 was a paper & pencil test, there were hardly any complaints from students. However, the various happenings in the current scenario of online/computerized CAT 2009 and the way the IIMs have handled the issue is making many students feel that the exam has not been fair to them. And the reputation and the credibility that the CAT 2009 exam has â€\" and more importantly the IIMs have â€\" are crumbling.

There are a few issues that are bothering students with no end, and the response from the IIMs is leaving them disappointed and confused. The main issues that are causing a lot of anguish among the students are given in below:
• Cancellation of test slots causing huge uncertainty in the minds of students apart from a lot of inconvenience.

• Inadequately trained invigilators causing problems like disturbance to test-takers while taking the test.

• Bugs in the testing software leading to some students getting extra time for the test. In an exam where every minute makes a difference in scores and percentiles, this means that some students are getting a huge unfair advantage over others.

• Problems with the testing interface leading to some answer choices not being visible in some cases.

• Unacceptably poor levels of invigilation leading to examination malpractices including copying â€\" as reported by a number of students.

• Questions being apparently repeated from one exam slot to another â€\" as reported by a large number of students who have already taken the test. This is extremely unfair to those who took the exam on the first few days..

• Also, there is a lack of confidence among the test-takers in the current process making them wonder whether the answers they marked would have been captured properly. This is creating new doubts about the sanctity of the test results that are expected to be declared on the 22nd of January 2010. The fact that some students who have already taken the test have been called by Prometric and asked to take the test again is only creating huge fear in the minds of all students.

The problem does not end here; even the candidates who are able to take the test are not satisfied. One the test day I had wait for 5 to 6 hr. at the test center in a dilemma whether the test is going to be conducted or not. This hampered my performance, as everyone knows that exam like cat is just not about you knowing the subjects but it requires a sound mental preparation. But once after waiting for such a long time I was exhausted I din feel like writing the test. I raised my voice there but unfortunately one there was not one to listen to me, unfortunately I have say that the test was conducted in inhuman condition. We could not drink water; we were asked to remove the shoes and were bear footed for the test in this chilling winter to add to the adversities. The chaos and confusion inside the lab during the test made the exam even more unpleasant.
I’m representing all the unsatisfied candidates who wants to raise voice against it, but are finding them self’s help less to do so. I strongly believe that everyone should be given an even and a fair chance. there are many candidates like me who have been preparing for this exams from past one year or so after their graduations. I don’t know how to put my grief and dissatisfaction in words, which has occurred because of this. But it’s certainly very impinging.
