The Bhopal disaster, also known as the Union Carbide disaster or the Bhopal gas tragedy, was an industrial catastrophe that took place at a Union Carbide pesticide plant in the Indian city of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on December 3, 1984. Around 12 AM, the plant released methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas and other toxins, resulting in the exposure of over 500,000 people. Estimates vary on the death toll; the official immediate death toll was 2259.
(1) Better Infra-structure is necessary.
(2) The govt. at Central & Local levels should take required steps to educate rural folks !

It is a great shame to the country and its people who are deaf and dumb and blind to the injustice to the sufferers and their family, 25 years passed and no justice at all, what a tragedy, more than the gas tragedy it is about after the incident, no action taken against any culprits indian or foreign origin, it speaks of our justice and investigation department, so many criminals just escaped but will they escape from destiny for such irrresponible behaviour to the fellow citizens and human beings, not a single burecrat or the policy makers or any body questioned, nor checked about the safety department, fire services or any other department who are responsible for checking and issuing and renewing license from time to time, what a shame, are the government state and central just wasting and draining the funds paying salaries for nothing and nobody is responsible for any foolishness

We as indians should ask for our apologies to the victims of this dreaded act, as we couldnt do anything to bring justice or help these people in need even after 25 yrs.
The incident took lifes of thousands in one night and left lakhs to suffer for generations to come. The victims got an average 12k INR as compensation and the company got free of all its responsibilities. We really care for our citizens and their life. 9/11 killed around 3000 people in NY and US waged a war for 8 yrs now, in Iraq and Afganistan and spent over many trillion dollars to capture them. Our proud govt and IAS officers stuffed their bank accounts and left the victims to suffer at their own fate. We are realy a country with national conscience. We remember the people when it comes in the speech of PM spoken for a political stroke and it becomes a topic of debate with no actionable results, in the media. Will return with this discussion on its anniversary next year. Till then keep talking and praying that someone will help these people.

Lessons learnt - - - - Tolerance is a VIRTUE - - Never give it up. Many of the areas where we need to look into in manging the environment clean are not attended to at all.The subject being on concurrent list the centre and satate shift responsibilities to each other with neither of them attending on it.
25 years down still tears rolling. No sympaties from any quarter.Every section of the society exploited the victims for their purposes and no one really working for them. This incident was treated in the same way as the masses getting affected by flood,Storm or Earthquqke normally called as a AOG( Act Of God)peril. God save the victims.

It is a shame to see people of India didn't get justice even after 25 years. It is unfortunate that media is silent on this. Electronic media should have initiated public debates and should have carried forward people movement to all corners of the country. The sarkari babu raaj should have got exposed where there is no importance given to justice unless you are a VIP

I expected that Prime Minister should have said a word on this tragedy and should have stated before the nation the next steps to be taken to give rightful compensation to the victims. If not PM, President of the country should have given some messages to the people which should have motivated the victims. By the way we can't expect anything from PM because his voice is so low that whatever he speaks, we doubt he himself would be hearing it clearly. President is very actively misusing her own office and wasting nations wealth in flying Sukhoi but for victims of Bhopal, she is highly unaware.

Judiciary is after all a bunch of Respectful Sarkari Babus who can't be questioned because they are shielding themselves behind a shield known as 'contempt of court'.

It is time that people of India should wake up. The second generation of Britishers needs to be kicked out from this country. We need independence once more but this time without 'Bapu'

If any of my fellow Indians here have invested in DOW Corporation, please remove your investment. The Indian government then felt that Bhopal can be covered up if we push some compensation into the hands of the victims. They didn't think of the generations after them that would remember. In their lust for companies that would invest in India (and the subsequent commissions and bribes they would earn), they didn't reprimand DOW or take them to task until 1999, when they filed a suit against DOW.

DOW has consistently washed their hands off the matter. They offered $550 for the injured, and a spokeswoman explained "that's plenty enough for an Indian". Do we have to put up with these sorts of companies? The Bhopal tragedy killed more than 8000 on the day and another 20,000 over the months that followed. This is as worse than most terrorist attacks in India's recent history. Indians around the world, UNITE! Take DOW to task for what they did, because otherwie, JUSTICE will never be done.

I have always believed that it was a BIG MISTAKE on part of Justice Ranganath Misra to have closed the case on the company, especially when the effects of the poisoning by MIC was not fully understood. It has forever left Union Carbide of the hook. India and the victims would have had a positive fallout both in terms of advanced treatment as well as identification and payment of compensation. Today nobody knows who are the true victims. Hence whatever the money there let it be used to rehab only the alive victims. The rest of the leftover cash should be put into PM's disaster/environment fund. Those whose death is directly linked to MIC must have already got compensation for their relatives. The rest will be absolute frauds who would have sprouted out of the doors

What checks have been put in to prevent such accidents?

India is plagued with catastrophes - man-made tragedies, industrial accidents, nuclear plant sabotage, oil depot fires, ammunition dump fires, dangerous diseases spreading due unhygenic conditions, dangerous roads both for walking and driving and yet little is being done to improve the safety record in the country.

Nobody seems to be accountable. Life goes on.

The parent company was a US company and the victimes got some compensation, if it was an Indian company, the victims would be still fighting for justice.
