Telangana row: Do smaller states ensure better governance?

TimePosted by IBNLive at 11:05 AM, Dec 08, 2009 | Updated at 11:56 AM, Dec 10, 2009 in IBNPolitics

The recent Telangana row has once again brought the focus on the demand for separate statehood. From an administration point of view, smaller states are easier to manage. Do you agree that smaller states ensure better governance?

The problem in India at the moment is quite funny indeed. It does not happen in another country. To get the attention, one guy makes a statement then it bcome news! He become big. 80% of our people do not think properly and jump into the wagon when someone says something either stupid or good? This has to stop. People destroying private and public property should be jailed and should be asked to pay for it. The Central Government should end army to keep law and order situation no matter what State is involved. People who demand things and create law and order situations should also be jailed.
Creation of a new State should be decided by a panel and not from a guy who wakes up one day morning and create havoc for the ordinary citizen's life. In fact Politics should be banned in the Universities. We want normal life in the country. People who plan to become Chief Ministers by creating their own State should be jailed. All Indians are not stupid? The problem in the country is that we have no law and order situation prevailing and as such the country does not go forward. I appeal the Central Government to arrest people that create confusion in the country so that we all can have a normal life.

Telengana struggle is one based on a wrong cause and misguided perceptions. By becoming a state alone, will not grow a people or a region. We need resources, skilled manpower, and businesses to create wealth. We should not allow these fissiparous tendencies to continue to produce states.

Division of states on linguistic basis was started from this region of India. Potti Srirmaulu starved to death to get Andhra Prdesh. I consider division of Indian states on the basis of language was a big blunder leading our people to different pockets of Tamilians, Punjabis, Malayalis etc. Before that division, we were self-sufficient organic entities living in a particular area developed over a long period in history. Linguistic division divided those organic entities destroying its harmony, feeding on the narrow feelings of localism, now exploited by various political parties for power.

So, Mr. Rao's starvation has a number of precedents in our young country's history. We should not allow the terror tactics of a politician and bow out to the pressure of populist agitation. Union Govt. should appoint a panel to study the proposal regarding its financial viability and then decide on its merits, not again on a populist agenda.

I agree that smaller states ensure better governance i am not saying this because i belong to telangana region but for years telanga region has not been developed except hyderabad. As we can see the situation in the region from 10 days I urge to Mrs.Sonia Gandhi to start the process of seperate state and i heard that its also been delayed due to naxals.I dont agree with this because the naxal effect in this region is been diminishing from the couple of years so naxal effect wont be much effect in this issue.

Thank you...

Actually this COULD have been true look at Singapore being small means being manageable.
But not here e.g Jharkhand , Goa where even a small no like 2 /3 can tilt the balance of power and that is what will keep the governments busy then who will have time for the State's problem. e.g Karnataka (though it is not a small state) but the CM was busy fighting his own party men when everyone was supposed to be looking after the flood victims.

Smaller states are not solution for poverty. Smaller states only adds on to poverty as the cost of creation of each states only brings in more government expenditure for governance with no money left for development. We already have issues of Maoists in AP and a smaller state would result in these Maoists taking control of these smaller states. Larger states would help in better management and lesser cost in governance. AP currently is one of the fastest developing states in the country. People of telangana should be proud and happy the capital of AP is in telangana. The govt needs to act tough on all these political parties who create unnecessary mayhem for their own political agenda. The TRS is a party whose leader some time back even propagated to turn himself into a militant for achieving his objectives. It is shocking that KCR who is a MP could make such statement and go scot free. He should have been arrested and punished for making such statements. The violence has affected both public and public property. The govt should bring in legislation to recover the loss of public ad private property from the party. This violence needs to be treated with a firm hand as a reminder to all political and non political organisations not to repeat this in future.

Speaking strictly in Telangana's perspective:

Barren lands, only ONE water resource( Nagarjuna Sagar dam), over crowded capital city(Hyderabad), projects initiated only on paper, over hyped real estate, NO REAL IT GROWTH.

The new state will have to depend on its neighbours for essential commodities who will jack up the prices, just to deepen the regional division.

I saw some one quoting more jobs for telangana youth...this is BS as these are the students who go on a rampage when a SEMESTER system is introduced in Osmania University, damage public and private property( APSRTC buses are their favorite targets).

The real estate prices will go down dramatically as there are more flats in HYD which can accomodate residents even if they donot buld a single room till 2012.

Smaller state, effective governance...i don't think so. This will only result in more IAS transfers, more corruption across the board.

Building sky scrapers does not mean IT revolution, it needs more brains, brains which can think and innovate....and talent will come from all over INDIA and not telangana alone.

What say you folks?

Telengana was exploited by the fascist Nizam of Hyderabad and his henchmen the Razakars. Therefore Telangana people were against its merger with Andhra Pradesh in 1956. It is the most exploited region of India. The agony of the people of Telangana should be seen to be believed. Therefore it should be given separate statehood. Small states give better governance.
Harya was a backward region of united Punjab. But ever since Harayana was carved out of Punjab, it has become a prosperous state giving out a large of luminaries to the country like Kalpana Chawala who went to space in the American space shuttle. It is also the hub of industry around Delhi now.

Differences could be noticed among people even at every ten kilometers. In this day and age where even national boundaries become virtually burled; where will we end up as a country if we let politicians blow the differences between us out of proportion? Australia a country much bigger than us is constituted of only 8 provinces; similarly China of 23. Can we say that they are not well governed as we are? Being a country so diverse we should uphold our similarities than our differences.
