Senior Editor Sagarika Ghose's top reads this year:
Alice Munro: Too Much Happiness
Ahmed Rashid: Descent Into Chaos
Colm Toibin: Mothers and Sons
Also Kancha Ilaiah's Post-Hindu India
"I just started it," says Sagarika, "and am finding it gripping. The caste system as an unseen continuing civil war, Hindu gods are all kings, queens and aristocrats, not messiahs of the poor!!"

Current Rating:

Lord Shiva of the Hindu trinity uses only a tiger skin and ash for covering his body and he lives in burial grounds.Lord Rama was a royal by birth but he spent fourteen years of his life in exile in forests.Lord Dattatreya an incarnation of the trnity put together made his living only on alms.He granted kingdom to Krutaveerya but himself remained an ascetic.Similiraly Shiridi Sai Baba who is believed to be a reincarnation of Lord Dattatreya lived only on alms through out his life. The masjid where he lived during his lifetime was his palace and the stone on which he sat was his throne. He is proof that Hindu gods are messiahs of the poor.Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Vamana to beg from King Bali.He incarnated as a pig, a fish and a tortoise.Hinduism respects all forms of life as same, be it an animal, a plant or a human being. There is caste system in Hinduism but a person is classified in the four castes by the type of work he/she does. The vedas say that a person does not be brahmin by virtue of birth but by virtue of deeds. It is the gradual misinterpretation by narrow minded and selfish people of the upper castes which has led to the current caste situation.

The brahmin way of life does not support life dwelling in riches.

Brahmins are supposed to abandon all worldly pleasures till they pass the brahmacharya age. Frugality is at the core of their lives at that point of time.

I dont think that classifying hindu gods as kings or queens would be appropriate as nowhere does the system encourage exorbitance.

However, what you are not not incorrect in observing that most of the gods have regal stature but there are several other symbolic interpretations that you are missing out.
