Women's Reservation Bill: Do you think it will help bridge gender gap in our society?

TimePosted by IBNLive at 08:51 PM, Feb 25, 2010 | Updated at 08:37 AM, Mar 08, 2010 in India

The Women's Reservation Bill will be tabled in Rajya Sabha today. Do you think this would help increase the political participation of women and, more importantly, in bridging the gender divide in our society? Tell us.

Well we cannot say that Women reservation bill will certainly empower women but it has certainly bought out the real egoist, chauvanist man of the male leaders in the India. Infact we should not have women reservation in the parliament, we should have SC, ST , OBC Quota so that these leader will start relaizing that reservation is not the solution for all the problems in the country. The injustice they do with students and with employees is now reflecting on them. The vote bank politics with which they are destroying the stmosphere of the country should be eleminated

Yes it will, to a certain extent. In the political arena at least women will get their rightful share. However real empowerment will take place only through an integrated and exhaustive approach towards general development of women like education etc;what we need is a major calibration cum reform strategy to empower women. This will truly uplift women from their predicament.

What is needed is a comprehensive approach to uplifting and empowering women - through concurrent, dove-tailing, programs in various ministries, including HRD. For example, rural employment schemes, compulsory free education, etc., will help uplift rural females. Reservations for women in parliament and assemblies will help if the political parties give tickets to women from all walks of life, not just to bahus, betis and patnis of the powerful and to the urban elite and fake film stars. Since political parties are traditionally male dominated, I don't expect their behavior to suddenly change. Western democracies, in which political parties voluntarily field female candidates in significant numbers (Scandinavian countries, for example) in elections, have done so after decades of implementing policies geared toward education and providing employment opportunities. Reservation of seats, as is being tried in some economically backward countries, hasn't yielded similar results. However, I don't see corrupt Indian politicians voluntarily giving seats to deserving females. Therefore, reserving 33% of the seats for women is better than nothing. It can have a positive impact on the female psyche and more of them may come out, be assertive and demand space for their views and issues. But this has to go side by side with genuine policies designed to uplift women, especially those in rural areas. Any society that doesn't treat its women with dignity, is uncivilized. India will continue to be one until women are empowered.

First of all, Kudos to PM & Sonia for getting Women's reservation bill passed in upper hose & fuel hike. As far as PM award is concerned, this seems like an botched set of award lobbied for like Padam awards. whar is PM contributon to India's consistency in foriegn policy. Sharm-e-shilkh, timing of starting the dialougue with pakistan when hafeed saeed is chanting jihad across the border. Ineffective Afgan policy, west got swayed by good taliban, what did PM to impress the right prespective about taliban to western allies? at least he should have stood his ground. we are not involved in was efforts. Continous land grabbing by China, in border areas. Administration of Security & foreign policy is so weak we cannot construct road within our border because China barks upon us. So where does this so called award fits for him. When Pm is failing continuously in foreign policy, how will develop expertise to solve regional problems & international problems. When PM does have these important expertise how does he dream to get India a permanat seat in Security council. he himself is he biggest hindrance in getting that process started. so what is this awards for ?

Three cheers for Congress, Sonia and Dr. Manmohan Singh for the women's bill, stock market and the price rise.
Let us remember out of 62 years of independent India Congress has been in power for more than 50 years. Yet, Congress call it achievement what has not been achieved so far. Whose fault is it any way that women, the minorities and the backward still need reservation in this country.

The famous dialogue from Swades says it all-"Be it in any field, women are making their mark equally".The passing of the bill will not make that much of difference to me....There is need for change in the mindset of the people.....There is so much of talent which is not recognized because of the "backwardly" mindset if I can say so...In the end there should be some difference some where at least....So, Women's bill is the stepping stone....Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!For all the women out there.....WE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If women claim equal strength why they are crying for reservation everywhere. They can fight brave and get it know. Strange to see our Congress party trying to place women everywhere really douting wheather Sonia gi becoming a bit feminist now a days. But we have to agree that she is a great woman of strength.

On Women's Reservation Bill:Passing of the Women's Reservation Bill on Tuesday,by the Rajya Sabha is a Historic Event in the post Independent History of our Nation. This will certainly contribute to the further improvement of the conditions of Women. The Nation has once again re-iterated its age old traditional trust, honour and respect towards it's Women by this step. This is a most welcome development. This also proves our Nation's high respect towards its Women, constituting a large chunck of its populace.I whole-heartedly congratulate the Ruling Party and its allies as well as the main National Opposition viz.,"The NDA" as well as all others who played a crucial role in this Historic event. I here by appeal to all those who opposed the bill under any pretext, to change their attitude and join the National main stream. The credit in my opinion, goes to the BJP's Young Parliamentary leadership, spear-headed by Smt.Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitely. It's a strange coincident that this bill is passed immediately after Smt.Swaraj takes reigns as Leader of the Opposition. Can this be viewed as a good omen(sign) for the future smooth functioning of our Parliamentary Democratic Setup? By:rkmurthym(CJ).
