Obama vows to end outsourcing US jobs: Will this affect the Indian BPO sector?

TimePosted by IBNLive at 01:25 PM, Sep 09, 2010 in Business

US President Barack Obama has vowed to end outsourcing US jobs and accused the opposition Republicans of pushing bankrupt economic policies and putting politics ahead of national welfare. Obama has vowed to end tax cuts which encouraged companies to "create jobs and profits in other countries". Does a protectionist attitude work in today's globally competitive scenario? Will such policies affect the the Indian BPO sector?

India’s reaction to the ban on outsourcing by the state of Ohio and Obama administration’s protectionist measures have been very subdued. I believe we should take a much harder stand. USA is doing no favours to India by outsourcing jobs. They benefit from it and we have come a long way since outsourcing first came into vogue. Like many people have been telling our BPO and IT industry are very depended on the US market. This is just one way of looking at it. The other way to look at it is today the US industry is more dependent than ever before on the Indian IT/BPO companies. The Indian administration has to take this into mind(the advantageous position) while reacting to the anti outsourcing policies. The US administration has taken many hard measures to push India and Indian workforce on the back foot. I believe its time Indian government needs to get its act together. As a first step we should probably ban any graduate passing out of IIT's and IIM's to move or work in the US. This would really affect the US Industry who are reaping the rewards of the talented Indians (specially IIT graduates). I don’t think this would be too difficult to implement as IIT comes under the purview of the government of India. Another step could be to limit the FDI (especially US) to our country. As a small step we should identify one of the states in India (may be TN) to ban US industry to invest or set shop here. This will have a spiraling effect. Imagine what will ford or General motors do. Even if we don’t implement all of this we should atleast make such noises so that Obama and his administration does not go on an "over drive". This is not the time to follow our "Ahimsa" attitude. I am sure if the Father of the nation was living during these times his reaction would have been the same.

Hello Obama Good Disigion for USA citizion but blocking outsoursing policy will not help in longterm because countries like India, China are having the largest Consumer market if they stop importing USA products whole Economy will be collaps.

The money what the other countries people gain from the USA most of the money spend in their home country on the USA products so indirectly such policy will affect the consumption.

The US President has done what any political leader would do to gain the trust of his people and to help his country's economy get back on its feet!

the Indian BPO sector has inadvertently been dependent on the US scenario and will now pay a huge backlash as projects will get rolled off sooner than ever! With China emerging as the next ultimate haven for cheap task force, heads are turning in their direction!

The Indian system of self dependence has to be re-kindled if the industry is to survive, the failure of which will result in huge pools of unemployment and a massive economic turmoil!

The huge volume of potential business opportunities available need to be tapped faster than ever so that when the blow comes, the after effect would be less painful than anticipated!

It is one of the fundamental rules for a political entity to not tickle & play mischief with the business community. To disturb the business out there even as a pin prick will show repercussions. With his too indulging nature Obama has already gathered displeasing publicity

This is against the US policy of free trade itself.Let him know that Bangalore can still overtake Buffallo or any othre IT Centre in the US.His anti Indian policy would be accepted as a challenge by India.

The US thinks that they are the only smartest people in the planet and only they know how to do business, they should understand that trade is not a one way traffic and even they have lot of things like aircraft, defense equipments and other products which can also be bought at competitive prices from other countries if they create a problem.

"Does a protectionist attitude work in today's globally competitive scenario? Will such policies affect the the Indian BPO sector?"

Yes....his actions to end outsourcing US Jobs will adversely affect the Indian BOP sector.....which is too dependent on the Westn.countries -very especially the US .

But Will Obama's guys and companies prove to be better proformers, honest & sincere in their work as compared to the Indian brains and Indian performances?

Naturally it effects fora short time.USA has every right to protect its own interests.India has to reduce its dependence on USA.A Craze has developed in India to go and settle in USA even if they have necessity or not. That should be curtailed first.
