Is Ahmedabad a divided city today?

On Weekend Edition, Rajdeep Sardesai will answer whether the blasts have divided this old city of Gujarat.

Dear Rajdeep,
Yes indeed its very obvious that the city is divided. If you Look at the pattern of the bombs and its locations you will realise that it is divided. Its just a vertical divide - left of Sabarmati and right of Sabarmati, its as simple. I would certainly agree that to a very large extent things were taken under control before the issue could flare up, and I certainly would like to commend the ruling state government for this.

But unfortunately I cannot share a similar view with regard to Surat. Something is just not right there. 24 or so bombs have been planted, and not one of them has been seen?? Why would any sane person plant a bomb on a tree? Of what good use would that be? Similarly why behind a sign board of all places? Motive wise this sounds too ridiculous, and definately not palatable

What is surprising is that we are blaming Pakistan and or Bangladesh people for this without going into the fact, that of the local people's involvement without which this would not be possible to execute. Trace one local person and all the other names would obviously come out, instead of blaming people out side India.

Lastly, and quite significantly we are as a people are too tolerant, and lack initiative to do anything, leave aside catching the terrorists. For once let us blame ourselves for the present state of affairs. We are more concerned with our own regional identity and affiliations - I am Bengali, I am a Maharashtrian,Kannadiga,Tamilian, Malyali, Andhrite,Goan,Kashmiri,Gadhwali, Punjabi so on and so forth...in ALL THIS WHERE IS THE "WE ARE INDIANS FIRST AND INDIAN LAST GONE??PRAY SOMEONE TELL ME THIS WILL YOU? We are suffering the consequences of this. I am not sure how far you would agree with me on this. Nevertheless I stand by my views.

I don’t think Ahmedabad is a divided city today. In fact, the bomb blasts have united all the sections of the society. Hats-off to Shri. Narendra Modiji for keeping the situation under control. It is a well known fact that many times politicians are responsible when things go out of control. These politicians belong to all political parties. “We, the People,” have to weed-out these politicians from all the parties.

well,as long as we indians stick to our stand of the fact that we are indians there is no chance for such questions and no one like you can hold tv shows of this sort,so its not all about resiliance but its about jingoism and chauvinism.

Dear Rajdeep,
Why do you always go to 2002,riots,communal divide?People have fallen sick listening to those words. Why don't you come to present times and the reality that the blasts occur frequently because of UPA.Its inefficieny to hang Afzal guru thereby encouraging terrorist activities. Not to mention the minority appeasement and vote bank policies of UPA.

On another subject, why don't you release the tapes of cash-for vote scandal where you claimed you have the tapes. Why are you so biased? When it was Bangaru lakshman you media day and night telecasted the videos. Why are you so rude to BJP.

Ahmedabad can't be a divided city. Cities like Mumbai , B'lore, ahmedabad .... have a good proportionate amount of educated middle class which will don't let it happen. People must be scraed a bit, but if they tackle this situation cllectively it will easy for them to get out of this trauma.

Be it Ahmedabad or South and central Gujarat, they have all been divided on communal lines during the Gujarat porgom in 2002.It seems the communal tensions still run high but intense vigil had made sure that no riots take place. This is clearly evident from the fact that when the blasts took place on sunday ,the army did a flag march the next day but in 2002 it was deplaoyed only 3 days after the riots began. However,in this age, where even small skirmishes are politicised and publicised to a great extent, none, both the state BJP govt.,as well as the centre donot want to risk another communal porgom.

Please care about blasts and less about divisions. You'll get your answers.

At the macro level the city and Gujarat in general seems to be united. However, after the last week attacks, on the ground level, it looks the City is divided. The post Godhra riots were justified becuase 59 Karsevaks travelling in Sabrmathi Express were burnt down. People of India have no clue whether it was an accident or otherwise. If it was the handiwork of the people who are in jail, why they have not been punished and also those responsible for aftermath. Obviously, the politicians there want the divide to continue for electoral gains. The recent events would only consolidate the divide.
