Should Mehtas be allowed to terminate pregnancy?

Should Mehtas be allowed to terminate pregnancy?

TimePosted by IBNLive at 01:33 PM, Aug 02, 2008 in Shows

A Mumbai couple, Haresh and Niketa Mehta, have approached the court seeking permission for an abortion as the foetus has been diagnosed with congenital disorders. The court has asked for a second opinion after J J Hospital said that though there is a heart blockage it does not warrant an abortion. The second opinion will be given on Monday. The law states that no abortion will be allowed after 20 weeks if the unborn foetus has a problem as it puts the mother's life at risk.

Yes, Mehta's should be allowed to terminate the pregnancy. When the Doctors have already made it clear, i do not think the Court is going to help them support the child after birth. Why have a pain throught your life? The court should think about the Pain Mehta's are going to face the whole life. How can the parents see the child in pain after birth.

I firmly agree with the court.
There are many mothers with worse situations- like having a baby with the brain developing at the back of the skull have courageously carried their child to term only to see him/her die an hour later. For that matter the very reason the medical sciences are so advanced today- we now have intra utero surgeries to address similar problems- is because of these children.
If all of us knew the crudeness of the procedure none of us would agree to it.
Finally, we do not have a right to choose over the life of an unborn child-only GOd can choose to take a life.

the parents have the right to take a decision. it is better to go for the termination rather than making the child suffer in the future.

Hi as per my personal views i think the current limitation still holds good and valid. I understand the grief of the parents and their worry what the child will be after the delivery. But how far are we right in killing the fetus now? What is the guarantee that doctors or medical f eternity give that their next child will be hail and healthy. We had seen many cased happening around the world in giving a good life for disabled children through medical advancement we had. Recently take the plight of the girl Lakshmi, who hailed from bihar with four legs, having one cojoined twin with her, but it was great effort took by doctors at bangalore and now she is leading a happy life. Just think if her parents thought and had aborted? So this is not a very rare case i think the child be given a chance to see the world, and live a happy life as long as child can, rather than terminating her life before child knows anything.

People are discussing about human rights, Do we have right to force a baby to Live a worst life by fitting
all these medical equipments and struggle for the entire life?.If these kind of problems can be identified
only during 20-25 weeks then the law should change and allow the abortion even after 20 weeks.

Well I do sympathize with tem but isn't this equivalent to mercy killing? If this is granted then the courts will be flooded with mercy petitions which is hugely unlikely.

The entire debate is so typical Indian - based on emotions, devoid of facts!
It is a little dicomforting to note Mrs. Mehta's concluding sentence - that she would like to know whether the child can lead a normal life without a pacemaker. Since the answer is a No, she seems to be shutting out all possibilities at the outset.
To put the debate in perspective, can some expert throw light on the following :
Is it correct that the solution is a pacemaker replacement every 4 years?
How complicated and expensive is the replacement procedure?
Can the person then live a normal life thereafter - if people otherwise use a pacemaker at a later stage in life, this is although unfortunate, perhaps only setting the clock at very early days.
Will the Mehta's child have any deformities, that will prevent it from carrying on normal life otherwise?
What exactly is "normal" life anyway? Okay, the child may not exactly be a world class athlete - anyway, in a few weeks time, we will know at the Olympics how many medals a billion strong "normal" Indians are able to garner?!
To a layman, it seems that, at least in this particular case, if the "pacemaker" is the solution, then they are being a bit too selfish. After all, they say that the heart is just a pump, so if the function can be performed artificially, why not? If it is expensive, then sourcing money is a problem - please count me in for a contribution; I'm sure many others would and the problem is surely surmountable.
I do not speak from a abstract platform - my wife and I have faced a similar choice before, though the case was too complicated and the pregnancy would have naturally terminated in any case.
But if I had the choice of just replacing a "pump" every four years, I would have taken it.
Can a child with an artificial heart not grow up and become say, a painter or a sitarist or a poet of repute. That surely would be more than normal to be me!

Who the hell are we? Enough of the media circus, leave some room for private life and let us make the decisions of our life!

Is science a boon or a curse to mankind ???? a few years ago the same parents would not have know the status of the childs health and would have prayed for a healthy baby and would have accpeted what ever was delivered .......today they use technology to find out if they want to keep the baby or not?? what if the child is born healty n looses its legs n arms a few years later?? will they decide to kill the boy/girl ??? cos its physicaly challenged ....we have no right to kill any one cos we are unable to give life .....its sad for the baby...its very mother palning to kill the child in her womb ....shameful indeed

No. Not ever.

This is not about the Mehtas or children with defects. This is about a moral and social issue.

If after birth caring is the issue, the Mehta's can always find some social organization which will be more than happy to do that.

If society issues a license to murder children for any reason, people wake-up, where will this stop? Think!

Do you want to trust Doctors who wont mind killing female babes because of their gender, remove vital organs from unsuspecting patients on some pretext. Come on guys give me a break.

We are living in the 21st century, where selfishness and materialism are the only gods we know. Please give children a chance. They are the future.

Dear Samjm,
With your logic we should not use the benefits of science either. So if mehtas have their child and dont use modern medicine it wont live more than a few minutes. It would be interesting if you addressed the moral or more correctly ethical issues than react so emotionally
