Is the BCCI being fair to Sourav?

Is the BCCI being fair to Sourav? | Read story

After being left out of the Rest of India squad for the Irani Trophy, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been included in the Indian Test squad for the first two Tests against Australia. The buzz doing the rounds is that the series will be Ganguly's last and he is likely to announce his retirement after the series. Over the last year, Ganguly has made over 1,000 runs in Test cricket at an impressive average of nearly 45, which is above his career average. However, he failed to do much during the Sri Lanka tour and had scored less than 100 runs. Is the BCCI being fair to the all-rounder?

First and foremost, Ganguly doesn't deserve a place in the test team, period. If you look at his record in test cricket, only two of his innings stand out. One against Australia in Brisbane and another against SL in Kandy. Apart from this,he hasn't done much in Tests. Agreed, he has shown lot of character whenever he was brought back into the team. But is that enough?Have the selectors succumbed to the pressure and included him in the team?He has no good record against Australia.Unfortunately for India, there doesn't seem to be a good replacement for him at the moment.Hence his selection and he must consider himself lucky.

hey man, read what you r writing. you start off with ganguly not to be in the team - i neither contradict nor support it - it is for time to tell. then you say there are no "good replacement" - do you mean then that he is the best available apart from the rest. if so then he is the right selection - isn't it - or you are suggesting that india play with a player less - as ganguly should not be in the team? it seems your thoughts are in bits - first get them together - then we can discuss selection issue - isn't it?

I beg to differ slightly.
If Ganguly does not deserve a place, then neither do Sachin, Dravid, and Laxman.

Why should Sourav be the target of dirty politics and parochialism everytime? If its a question of age and form then the others should be asked to leave too.

and you think sachin (who dont have a consistent record after 2001) and Dravid (the wall got cracks and can even be pierced with a diwali rocket) deserve a place in the team???

If there is a cricketer who is most debated about, it is Sourav Ganguly. People in this country love to hate this individual and there are reasons for it. He challenged the existing system, brought in aggression in the Indian team, demanded, negotiated with the board and gave a new face to Team India, to the same lame team lead by Azharuddin and Sachin. But when you have everything going right, people dont take everything well. Even I agree that his individual performance didnt match Sachin's in ODIs or Dravid in tests, but if it was a good thing for the team why disturb the winning combination.
In comes a foreigner with an hidden agenda for divide and rule, runied 2007 World Cup from the country and made a happy exit.
Politics: The CORE COMPETENCE of Indians didn't leave cricket also. And todays news looks more like a political negotiation between an individual cricketer who fought back his position in the team, performed exceptionally well in the last year only to be targeted by the selection comittee again.

BCCI is certainly growing in power and prestige but it has got nothing to do with the good-for-nothing administrators of cricket in India. As india is wrongly skewed towards cricket, BCCI is skewed towards Sachin.

Better evolve or grow up

Its a common saying in India - Everyone salutes the rising star. The same applies to Ganguly. though he is constantly giving his best now to Indian Cricket, but still he is continuously ignored. the more he performs, the more he is ignored. he has given a lot of AGNIPARIKSHA's but still no one is concerned about him. Except his Fans. they like him to play for India in the years to come. But how to wake up BCCI??
and the Selectors??
Truly BCCI is not doing any fair to Ganguly this time. but as a Ganguly fan, i am hoping for a miracle to happen.

I completely agree to you. But unfortunately Indian cricket is ruled by some politicians and businessmen who might never have played in their school days. But money controls everything. First Ganguly was made the victim of the feud between Sharad Power group and Dalmiya. Then they had get some scapegoat for the Sri Lanka series. If statistics has to be counted then I believe Sachin scored one run less than Ganguly in that series(even though I'm a great fan of Sachin) and it was heard that the captain, Kumble, didn't want Ganguly..Can one tell me how great his performance was in that series? We've to see this as long as BCCI is ruled by people like Lalit Modi, Niranjan Shah, Sharad Power....So I'm not surprised by this kind of behavior from them...Let's hope Ganguly proves all of these people wrong and retire with his head high. He has fought enough with these odd people.

How long will this go on? The selectors are making a fool of themselves. Youngsters are always denied of their place whether it be in Sports or in Politics.

Youngsters will prove consistency only if they are given at least half the amount of chances that are given to the seniors.

You're speaking of honourable exist - so far I have not known a single crickter who exited honourably, at the peak of their performance.

No the BCCI has treated Ganguly shabbily over the years!

If oldies like Rahul, Sachin and Laxman can be part of the team, Ganguly deserves to be there!

In fact, I would rate Ganguly ahead of the other 3 in the Fab 4 simply coz atleast Ganguly has rescued Team India in a few occasion when the other 3 has failed but the rest have never!

The problem with India has been - either the Fab 4 succeed together or fail together! Let is hope for a turn around this time. I am sure Dada will score 2 or 3 centuries in this series and silence his critics.

Yes it is very much fair and it is a good precedent. I think this should be the way forward. Give every GREATS a last chance and a last series and a GOOD FAREWELL. They toiled hard (although money was there) and they need a good farewell. If they are not going even after this, then we need to move on.

Overall a great move by BCCI and Chika.

BCCI making fun of selection process. Place should be included in team based on his form , not out of sentiments and emotions. There is no point in including him in team as it his last tournament. In this point BCCI should take leaf out of Australia.

I think now is the time for saroav to prove that he has it in him to take on the australians.

Thats true that BCCI should not make selections based on emotions or sentiments, but taking him into the test series is a good option, as he is in form now and experience is very much required in test cricket.
