Which Indian city is the safest for women?

TimePosted by IBNLive at 12:30 PM, Oct 02, 2008 in India

As more and more women step out of the secure confines of their homes to study, work and make a life for themselves, there are rising incidents of violence and harassment against them. For women in the cities, life is not a smooth ride. From lecherous glances to bottoms being pinched in crowded buses and Metros to being harassed, life for the fairer sex is not fair in the cities. What can be done to make our metros safe for women? Tell us.

I have been in Chennai for over 5 years and now in Bangalore for over 7 years. I feel Bangalore is much much more safer a city to live in than chennai. Im surprised Chennai and Delhi are in List of Indias safest cities.

My double thumbs up for Bangalore

PS: Im neither a Bangalorean nor from Chennai

No surprise , you are not publishing my comment.

But issue remains same, check the comments, there are people who share my views. Cities of Gujarat are much much more safer and hey, you did not even included any of them!!

Biased people.

Chennai city police is definitely doing a good job when compared to other metros. When it comes to law and order, especially treating crime against women Chennai police deserves appreciation (though there may be some exceptions at times which are loudly spoken about).

Chennai is safer than other metors.

None of the Indian cities are safe!
How safe a city is, is always a comparison.
On the comparison scale, I could say, Chennai is the safest among other cities.

Every city has its own history of women harassment, being killed mercilessly. Some of the cities did not spare even the foreigners. How rude!

Chennai was not an exception. We do have a number of cases relating to women being abused. The police or the city administration always wakes up on the lose of a life. So did the Chennai City Police. On the lose of a couple of them, the security has been tightened in the city and since then, the number of cases relating to women have been reduced drastically. The way they protect the City is at the best! Hats-off to the Chennai City Police

But to call a city safe? It cannot be achieved just by the Poilce or the City Admin or the Govt. It is in the hands of every citizen. When we take up responsibilities to protect “our” women, we can make India a safe place for everyone \" Indians and the foreigner tourists.

Regards
Edwin

women are in no way safe be it at home or at work in any part of the world
the world has changed so drastically that you canot even trust a relative today but that does not mean we should be scared or cut ourselves away no BUT there are a few guidelines we need to follow when we go out alone especially alone
the guardians the police sometimes are rude and unconcerned so we need to be extra cautious
this topic is more relevant today because of ms shiela dikshit remarks instead of every channel carrying her coments very little was carried out to catch the culprit he or she must have been having a good laugh i am sure
read ms dikshit lips carefully
she was almost going to say delhi is unsafe for women but controlled her remarks and blurted out adventurous its no big deal to have caused such an explosion of remarks
she was working for headlines chhanel
well since they were aware she was so late why did they not try to reach her home or send security with her surely they also need to be pulled up
its very hard to find a murderer cause till he is caught all evidence would be washed away
suspect 1 maybe someone who knew she d be late
2 her male friend who was shuned
3 some enemy
4 a rapist
cannot have been a thief cause nothing was missing i guess

as a mother yes my heart goes out to the family we cannot do much except pray the culprit is caught
mrs colleen traynor
chembur mumbai

I have lived in all major metroes. Agree with most of the people . Chennai is pretty safe ! I would think that except for Bangalore most of the southern cities are better. From my friends I have heard a lot about Gujarat as well. My verdict is tier 2/3 towns are better than the urban majors .

Delhi as one of the options in safe cities in India for women !! What a joke ?

I think in the big city list important names missing are Ahmedabad & Surat. Nowhere else in India, I have seen women so easily moving around even in the late hours. That could happen only if women really feel safe moving around alone.

Haven't really been to all those cities, but I do hear that Chennai is pretty safe.Delhi is indeed horrific and Mumbai is only a bit better.Kolkata, where I stay, is the worst of all. It's a harrowing experience to walk with your girlfriend, mom or sister and see people making pathetic catcalls and silly comments. The Metro is another favourite for the city's nymphomaniacs.Women in the city should be prepared for being harrassed and I bet there is not one who hasn't had some bad experiences.

Among the metro cities Chennai is safer. The city has efficient police services. The Govt.of TN has good administration atleast regarding the safety of people.
And few other small cities/towns of Karnataka,Andhra are also safe.
