Ban on Gautam Gambhir: Is cricket losing its sporting spirit? | Read Story

Gautam Gambhir has been slapped a one-match ban by the match referee for his spat with Aussie all-rounder Shane Watson on Day 1 of the ongoing Kotla Test. Sparring at competitive field events is a worldwide phenomenon and all international sports have an element of histrionics attached to them. Cricket being a passionate game has also had its share. Isn't the ban too tough? Is the game losing its sporting spirit?

Yes, at least by some team…but the problem is the team concerned is suppose to world champion so other team following suit.
As far as India team goes it hurts more because more often than not they are on receiving end. Receiving end from opposition team and than from authority.
As far as I’m concerned there is two reasons to it.
1. Jealousy â€\" Both opposition team as well authority (including umpire at times) running the show today know but are not ready to accept that all the money in the game is coming from India. The fact that India is superpower as far as cricket is concerned disturb them and the envy leads to resentment. They are not ready to accept the fact and it comes out in form of biased decisions. Similar to what happens with USA, what ever they does everyone is ever ready to criticize their act. Ask left
2. Art of sledging â€\" India is still novice in this art. New young cricketer coming today does not want to take from opposition and while giving it back they do not use it brain but the heart. Someone provokes and they react without understanding the provoking was a part of the act and they to act and not react. Art is simple, first take umpire into confidence, make a mountain out of nothing and than if want give it back to the player. This helps in two ways Umpire as well mike camera close to umpire standing position captures the right word. Camera footage shows you as a wronged person. Take a close look at Harbajan-Symond episode and you know what I mean. Mr Hyden, who was no where close to incident suddenly appears in pictures and start putting pressure on Harbajan.
Hope this is temporary phase and soon once we are world Champion, other will start following us and game will again become a gentleman game.

It's always Indians who are made scapegoats for any mistakes happens in Cricket against Austrlia. Cricket's sporting spirit is no where gone, even if there is a smaller divertion from the spirit it is because of a headweight team like Austrlia. BCCI and ICC have to take tougher action against Austrlia team.

These instances have become sort of repetitive

Indian Players start playing well, Aussies start their strategic sledging (in other words, mouthing obscenities)
Indians predictably react
Enquiry happens Aussies always deny the charge, Indians always accept their mistake
Match referee looks into the matter and again predictably gives Indians the harsher punishment letting the Aussies either go scot-free or hands them some token punishment
Aussies Cricketers and mgmt express their dissatisfaction over the lenient treatment meted out to Indians
Aussies ex-players, media and commentators solidly back their players turning a blind eye to their antics
Aussie media start their articles on the worst behaved Indian team and BCCI muscle flexing (Conveniently forgetting behavior of their players, Including the fact that in Bhajji-Symmo case the judge firmly believed symmonds to be the instigator and unsportsmanlike)
Indian media goes all sanctimonious, running repetitive coverage of all the past misdemeanors of the concerned Indian player. (One editor even links Gambhir's behavior to the violence against North Indians by MNS workers!!!!)
Except for Mr Gavaskar, Indian ex-players also turn sanctimonious talking about rap on the knuckles etc...
Six - seven months later an Aussie ex/player comes up with his memoirs again targeting Indians
So now I think we all have to wait 6 months for may be Hayden's memoirs (Probably named Weedy Truths!!) to know some more truths about Indian Players

its time now that indians also should feel the heat....there's no denying that the oz have tormented us in the past but we r definetly not saints....be it bhajji...sreesanth...yuvraj...and now gambhir...we too have crossed lines
verbal abuse is one thing...but by no means should it exceed to any kind of physical contact...i hav never seen aussies doing that.......they play with there mind but we play with ou hearts ....in emotions we do things out of our jurisdiction.
ultimately i want to say that wat has happened is perfectely alright

G.G. did nothing wrong. He just gave response to the doing of Shane Watson. After this incident , Shane Watson will think twice before while teasing (irritating) any batsman.

Well i donno sporting spirit but it not GentalMAn's game any more for sure...
and i would say the way cricket has progressed From test match to Pajama cricket(one days ) to 20-20, the aggression in the field is the part of the package, Cricket is just following the league of any other multi player outdoor game which is played in small time frame(compared to Mighty Test matches) like football, rugby, baseball hockey...
The point is how much smarter we are in showing our aggression, coz u agree with me or not the only Idea behind aggression in the field is to cloud the opponent with psychological pressure and making him do exactly what u want him/her to do and off course simultaneously evading the eyes of the whistle blower....
And believe me the Aussies are The master in this art,For a instance see what they achieved, they wanted gambhir out of the field, okei not this inning they got him out for complete match.
Poor Gambhir he was in best of his form proving to be a real asset , but what now! , even after double ton he must have been scolded in dressing room for his action coz next match he as a Batsman in the form wont be there for India..Look at that Dude Watson he ll get couple of thousand dollar less in his account but he did serious damage to Indian batting line up , he got the wicket of gambhir before even playing the match.....
Look at the media .again making hue n cry about partiality n all tht synonyms , what Gambhir did was serious offence ,getting physical wid a aussie dude that to in front f camera. Not accepted Mr.Gambhir
Its high time Bcci appoint sledging coach for our guys that they give gali ka jawab wid gali only, that to doing it wid a bright smile on there face so that u dont get caught on camera(No pun intended here) one wise man told me once "choori karna kala hai pakra jana Paap"(stealing is an art getting caught is a crime) same is the case wid sledging , i hope our dude understand tht too

Well, clearly for everyone, Gauti nudged Shane Watson when the latter was clearly abusing. Yes, I agree that any physical contact is unacceptable. Having said that, I would like to pose just one straight question to the so called 'World Champions'-Put your hands on your hearts and tell us...are you really playing to the SPIRIT of the game' And dont bother answering coz the answer is evident to the world.

Tables have defunetely turned.No1 stands back and tolerates while you guys(Aussies) use all sorts of negative tactics. There's more to come and it will be so till you sit and ask for yourselves "What have we done!". Its not a serious damage anyway if Gauti sits. Dhoni will tear you apart for a double this time. Watch yourself rather than watching us.

Action and Reactions are equal and opposite ! But it looks like it does not apply in a fair game of Cricket any more. Coming from an Englishman like Broad it is surprising.

yes. cricket used to be called as a gentleman game. but keeping current controversies in mind, it doesnt seem to. and it started with words. and the best team(australia, as it used
to be), give away best sledging comments to its opponents. and now a days it has become human nature to copy others. but australian are the starters to this controversies. may it be on the field or off the field. and indians are catching this bad habit. its now the players responsibility to stop such offences to happen in future.

The punishments have always been heaped on the Indian whenever an Australian player is involved. There have been "n" number of incidents like this now and everytime its the Indian who is put to sword. Are Simon Katich and Shane Watson, innocent saints? Why this hypocrisy, when Indians give a tit-for-tat?
