Should there be capital punishment for ragging?

Should there be capital punishment for ragging? | Read Story

TimePosted by IBNLive at 09:28 AM, Mar 10, 2009 | Updated at 12:46 PM, Jul 23, 2009 in India

The Medical Council of India has recommended that ragging is a heinous crime and must be punished severely. The Government doesn't seem to be entirely convinced though. Studies have shown that more serious ragging offences are reported from medical colleges. The MCI, the country's regulatory body for medical education, has therefore suggested that ragging be made a cognizable offence at par with rape, atrocities against women and ill treatment of persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Tribes. Although some states have banned ragging in campuses, there is yet to be a complete ban on ragging. Is capital punishment the only way to deal with such offenders?

Capital punishment for ragging will be the only deterrent from repetition of such incidents.

Heartfelt condolences to Aman's family. They will never get back Aman whatever happens to the criminals who killed their son.

Shocking to know that this happened in a medical college with future doctors doing this.As long as we have got people with political connections, difficult to implement any law with fairness.Make strict law and BAN ragging in all institutions, colleges and campuses. My heart bleeds for the family who lost their son for nothing. Please dont spare them punish them.

We have become so used to all these things that when such a big disaster happens then we open our eyes and start discussing. The educational institutions should take this as a lesson that this should be BANNED from Day 1 of the college. Capital punishment seems to be the only punishment for ragging. The case should be filed in a fast track court so that within 15 days the verdict should come. The college must be de recognised with immediate effect.

Ragging should be baned from colleges.Whoever part of this, court should give punishment such that their future family member also wont think about the word"Ragging".The guy who is died, who will take care of his family?College/Govt?No.Nobody will come and help for them for rest of their life.So give punishment to those such that their life also be like that for ever.Hang them till death. This is the punishment i think they deserve.

Ragging is already an offense under the IPC.Should mens rea and the act of ragging result in the death of the victim ,only then death penalty be awarded.Expulsion of the offenders, debarring them from examinations,a mention of such an act in the character and school/college/university leaving certificate are also tough deterant steps. All educational institutions must have Discipline Advisory Committies which act impartially. The problem is not the absence of legal provisions or non existence of discipline enforcing authorities, but the will to ensure discipline.

This is not the first time the nation has come across to a incident like this, there are some states where ragging is banned in collages and educational institutions which is good but why cant this rule be nationalized.
What if those are involved are from a influential families would they go scotfree?
The collage authority should take a strict action against those who are responsible and handover them to police, so that no one ever would dare to do such a thing. Students like these are no good to be citizens.

Those indulging in ragging are basically cowards who take to extreme forms of cruelty to camouflage their cowardice. They should be put behind bars for lifetime.

Ragging is inhuman, brutal, and highly sadistic in its nature. As an initial punitive measure, capital punishment may be too much. But in no case it should no less tah rigourous imprisonment.

Capital punishment is not the true punishment for these type of offenders. Such offenders must be delt with a completely different way. firstly such students, when convicted of such an offence, all their academic degrees must be cancelled. Then they must be given a non bailable five year prison sentence
