Should there be capital punishment for ragging?

Should there be capital punishment for ragging? | Read Story

TimePosted by IBNLive at 09:28 AM, Mar 10, 2009 | Updated at 12:46 PM, Jul 23, 2009 in India

The Medical Council of India has recommended that ragging is a heinous crime and must be punished severely. The Government doesn't seem to be entirely convinced though. Studies have shown that more serious ragging offences are reported from medical colleges. The MCI, the country's regulatory body for medical education, has therefore suggested that ragging be made a cognizable offence at par with rape, atrocities against women and ill treatment of persons belonging to Scheduled Castes and Tribes. Although some states have banned ragging in campuses, there is yet to be a complete ban on ragging. Is capital punishment the only way to deal with such offenders?

Everyone, during their times in college, has been a part of ragging. Ragging is a good way of interaction with Juniors and seniors, provided it is within limits. But What are the limit, unless you are not hurting someone mentally or physically.

Now a days, we are seeing a very wrong side of a very effective communication method.

And capital Punishment, Doesn't Rape deserve that? Who gets capital punishment in India? Someone who has killed 20 people is sitting idle in Tihar or some other Jail, serving a life imprisonment. Do they don't deserve capital punishment?

I fully support the capital punishment for ragging. Somehow we indians have got the habbit of taking laws into out hand as we know that we can escape easily. stricter laws are needed to treat this mess which has reached an alraming level. I have faced so much on the name of ragging that I cannot mention all those things at a public forum like this. How can somebody take away the dignity of a person whose fault is that just he is new to a place. This injustice need to be taken care by stricter laws. otherwise it will reach to a level where we will not be able to control it.

Its not the question of capital punishment or not...if a person feels humiliated...he should feel secure that there is some law and a deterrent that will help him get justice.

In our country, everything gets politicised. The punishment as well is a much politicised one. If the parents are strong enough financially and are connected, they can pursue teh case. Do you think, this is the only ragging incident that has happened for the last several years? Are there not children of lesser mortals like mine who may suffer this and still the incident goes un-noticed?

Till the day the politicians/ office bearers like principals etc. are made accountable and punished justice will not be done.

Question here is capital punishment to whom? For the people who actually ragged the victim or those who allowed such things to happen? Both are equally responsible and must be punished. Once that starts happening, things will automatically fall in place.

Capital punishment is required for:
1. Rape
2. Murder
3. Food Adulteration
4. Corruption in all forms, irrespective of value
5. Charging Exorbitant education fees
and
6. Ragging.

Our politicians will agree for everthing except item no 4.

If we look at he past ragging was something that introduce junior to senior. At that time students after finishing their school are so much shy and can't match with them each other. So ragging was the way seniors are get connected to juniors as well as for matching the juniors even in themselves. And this process develop so many qualities. for example if the guy who have had his schooling in village and joined mumbai's college than he needs to be bold if he/she want to stay in mumbai. otherwise he/she cant live in mumai. this is just one example but it can be so many.

looking at the today's aspect today the ragging is being misused. so definitely there should be punishment for the ragging but it should not be a capital punishment. But ya, if the ragging is at extreme level than there should definitely be a punishment which is sufficient enough to teach him the result.

so. I think punishment should be there but not capital punishment..

Our nation does not even send the terrorists to the gallows then how can we expect a "lesser" crime to be awarded capital punishment.

No doubt ragging is a heinous crime and it should be punished severely but why we are thinking of only Capital punishment everytime for everything.

Why we are not implementing Capital punishment for Rape which is even worse than this, why we are not giving Capital punishment to the people who attack our country and kill so many innocent people like what Kasas has done. Why we have not punished the person who had attacked our parliment killing our national security guards. We are ignoring all these crimes which needs Capital punishments and debating on Ragging alone.

Yes even Ragging needs to be punished severely may be life imprisonment.

Ragging today has transcended the boundarys of an act of "just knowing somebody" and has now started giving nightmares to many kids and parents. Whatever may be the positves aspects, and there are, the negative aspects have a long lasting imact on the student. The only punishment that I can forsee in such case is that the student or group of students indulging in raging should be debarred from admission into any further education institution in India. It should be dealt with firmly and not by paying lip service. Aman kachroo's case, we stand by his family, is an opportunity for the Government to put its act right.

Lets see...

This is not ragging-so please stop using this term while referring to this issue which is in reality assault leading to murder. Just because it happens to a fresher on college campus, it cannot be dismissed as high spirited ragging. Ragging is NOT the birthright of seniors in college nor a compulsary right of passage ritual for freshers. No one has the right to humiliate, traumatise or assault a student in college where people come for an education. It is not a positive 'growing experience' thrust on the student for the sake of sadistic pleasure of power hungy imbalanced seniors. The only way forward is Zero tolerance toward ragging and full responsibilty on the institution, principal and warden for the safety of all students. No ifs no buts no excuses, no loop holes.
In Aman's case though, it is not ragging but murder. SO death penalty to the 4 involvled and life imprisonment for the principal and warden. Maybe we can send our children into hostels if needed without worrying ourselves to death. Taking a pledge can easily be broken. Make the act of ragging a criminal activity
