No more Amans: take a pledge against ragging

No more Amans: take a pledge against ragging | Read story

TimePosted by IBNLive at 10:34 AM, Mar 11, 2009 in India

For Rajendra Kachroo, life will never be the same again. The father who lost his only son, Aman Kachroo, on Sunday is yet to come to terms with the grief. For Aman's death was no ordinary one. The 19-year-old student, a fresher at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Kangra, died of brain hemorrhage caused by excessive beating by four third-year students during ragging. Although the four offenders have been slapped with murder charges, it brings little solace to the Kachroos. Aman's case is not an isolated one, though. In campuses across the country, especially in medical and engineering colleges, there have been and continue to be, many such instances. For a country like ours which prides in its youth capital, it is time that such senseless acts are dealt with strongly within the ambit of law. While the need of the hour is stronger laws to tackle ragging, it is also high time that we as individuals decide to stand up and voice our concerns for the future of tomorrow. Come, join us as we take a pledge against ragging.

My heart goes out for the parents of Aman. This was uncalled for and an extremely hideous act. I feel this is a failure of the complete society and not only the raggers, it reflects the sad state of affairs of our society. I do not think death sentence is a solution here, it will be a very easy escape for the raggers. The court should think out of the box and as a punishment the guilty should be made to take care of the parents of Aman for the rest of their lives. They shld be made to fulfill at the monetary needs to his parents. This is the least they can do for their crime.

I would request college kids reading this column to pls say no to ragging. We all have had very bad experiences with this. Sometimes it crosses the limts of decency, sometimes it is a shame for anyone with normal background. I have seen that most of the colleges are ignoring this issue and even in the hostels, it has become an everyday affair, It is so hard to get a hostel acmdn that people do not dare to blow up the issue and put up with the torture. In most of the cases the ragging will be very vulgar.

Ragging may be cool for some, but please do understand everyone is not from the same background. Comments passed to rag can offend sensitive people intensely. People enter professional colleges with new hopes, it is not a funfair for everyone. When it goes beyond verbal, i think harsh punishment should be consdiered.

We have to remember that the 'seniors' who rag the juniors were 'juniors' a year ago and were ragged by some other 'seniors' in that year.

The ragged cannot do much to the ragger, so the next year he promotes himself to ragger status and finds new ones to be ragged. This cycle continues year on year - the ones getting ragged are the ones who carry the disease onward year on year.

One batch of the ragged should take a conscious call not to turn into a ragger in the next year. This will cause the disease to stop spreading. The disease carrier is eliminated and so will half the problem.

All ye who are getting ragged this year - take a pledge not to take your revenge on the juniors coming the next year. Help eradicate this problem.

After so many strict laws against ragging, still there is no stopping of this gruesome act in institutions across the country. now penalising the guilty students only will not be enough. the govt. should now also punish the authorities and in charge of the institution if they are found not following the rules and trying to hush up complaints of ragging.

Is this new to India? What were the College and hostel authorities doing when this was going on? Why does not hostel warden keep a watch on such atrocities and going ons?? No college with hostel facility should be allowed to function if there is no check on the hostellers/seniors. Parents must respond to any signs of trouble too. This sad whole episode is and was preventable.

I take a pledge to be viglilant to prevent some more Amans being beaten to death by ragging hooligans.I would keep a close watch on the behaviour of some rowdy students near my area and warn the principal and the hostel warden to have control over such boys.If I come to know that they are protectng the ragging sons and daughters of the rich, the influential and the powerful,I would collect the signatures of my neighbours and give a police complaint against the college authorities.
Srikantiah.

This is sad, it is shameful, a young life lost.

Atleast 7 families affected by this one senseless act, and lax attitude of the college authorities.

This is not Ragging. This is pure and simple murder and the perpetrators need to be punished. The management should also be charged for abetment of the crime.

Ragging is a friendly affair where you get to know your seniors and fellow freshers, it a process of initiation into college life.

When did all this degenerate into physical violence? and take on the criminal contours? have the authorities been ignorant of this, or are they culpable of promoting violence against the junior students.

These institutions of learning are supposed impart skills that enable young adults to be cope with the world and make them worthy human beings and responsible citizens of the country.

It is very obvious as in other areas, the malaise is set deep, a very serious and concerted effort is required to root out this evil from all institutions lest we have more Aman Kachroos in our country.

Irresponsible, errant behavior and intolerance are eating into our society. The so called "Students", who have committed this crime must not be let go. Its highly shameful an act.I suggest death penalty for them, so that no one in future dare to repeat this act of causing irreparable harm to others.

Current Rating:

Well, its not just the few senior students who are responsible for this act but the educational management. As a society also we tend to look away from these issues. If the management holds back the senior students from their exams or removes them from college that would be more a deterrent than death penalty. Death just ends the person but the act performed is carried on by others. We need to set a good example and transform the educational institution from a money making process to imparting knowledge and culture.

It starts with each one and each one is responsible for Aman's death as each one of us tolerate crime and inflict crime is some form on someone everyday. Introspection is necessary and serious actions to rectify the system.
