No more Amans: take a pledge against ragging

No more Amans: take a pledge against ragging | Read story

For Rajendra Kachroo, life will never be the same again. The father who lost his only son, Aman Kachroo, on Sunday is yet to come to terms with the grief. For Aman's death was no ordinary one. The 19-year-old student, a fresher at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Kangra, died of brain hemorrhage caused by excessive beating by four third-year students during ragging. Although the four offenders have been slapped with murder charges, it brings little solace to the Kachroos. Aman's case is not an isolated one, though. In campuses across the country, especially in medical and engineering colleges, there have been and continue to be, many such instances. For a country like ours which prides in its youth capital, it is time that such senseless acts are dealt with strongly within the ambit of law. While the need of the hour is stronger laws to tackle ragging, it is also high time that we as individuals decide to stand up and voice our concerns for the future of tomorrow. Come, join us as we take a pledge against ragging.

Ragging one's juniors is the most cowardly and cheap thing that one can do. I call it cowardly, because only a person who does neither has self confidence, nor has the courage to face somebody who is his equal takes on a person lower than him. I have always maintained that every bully is a coward. Have you ever noticed any bully alone? They always come in groups. Whatever you may say, it never happens that a bully faces his enemy alone.

One must never submit himself such cowards. Doing so would increase their sense control. Complaining against them would never have the desired effect, but would increase their bitterness, aggravating their behavior.

I think that the only way to tackle these cowards is,turning united against them, knocking their true nature into their empty brains. This job lies in solely in the hands of the teachers, students, and most importantly news channels like yours.I humbly request news channels like yours to take up the issue of ragging, launch campaigns, and campus investigations(using secret cameras,etc).This would greatly increase public awareness on the issue of ragging. Only this effort, I think would really make Aman's soul rest in peace.

I pledge!!

I completely feel that there is no sense in ragging. People will argue endlessly that it breaks the barrier between the newcomer and seniors etc. etc. This is not true. All it creates is an animosity and hatred. At the same time, the person who gets ragged and survives, can likely go on to become a monster himself and rag his juniors more ruthlessly.

I am engineer myself. I also got ragged somewhat. But, those days, it used to be harmless verbal duel. However, the student community today are getting another dimension - political and criminal. With this, the level of ragging also has gone up.

This must be addressed immediately by all the Universities. They cannot still be in the same fool's paradise that ragging is useful/ necessary evil. Days have changed and the regulations in campus should also change with the changing times. This is to prevent more of such unfortunate incidents from happening.

Ragging should be a one time step for healthy introduction between junior and seniors . it should not become a continous affair or an obsession with seniors to harass juniors till they die . it should be stopped and stopped with iron hand . strict laws like termination from college for life , criminal proceeding to be initiated etc. should be made and implemented .
life is too precious to be left at the mercy of few seniors who can destroy it . every student has right to enjoy college life , not only some seniors . we do not want more amans .
make strict laws and more importantly ,implement it .

I would surely agree with you that Ragging is in fact a menace in colleges. I am an engineering student and I am thankful to our college because has been implementing stringent directives against any form of ragging, unless its hampering the interaction between seniors and juniors.

I would appeal to the government to please please ensure laws that will ensure that ragging in formally eliminated from the colleges and the government should also take measures including counselling to both seniors and juniors so that a healthy interactive environment exists in college.

This problem has been existing ever since I have been growing up and got my senses to understand what exactly ragging is.That means it almost clost 15 years that we as parents,teachers,government have not been able to tackle crime which starts at such basic level.This shows the failure of parents who have not been able to inculcate the right values and education about respecting every human.No teacher has probably taken the responsibility of being a guide to end this "germ".I faced ragging too in my hostel,but that was fun, and I used to look forward for such friendly fun interaction with seniors,where we could laugh at ourself as well.But this is unacceptable.The only punishment for such raggers is not by hanging them, but by giving them the penalty of looking after the parents of those parents whose child has suffered.And as for the college authority it is critical for them to ensure that every student go through compuslsory anti-ragging classes.The causes and the effects of ragging.True stories on ragging on how it has spoilt lives of raggers and those who were ragged.The government can;t do much unless authorities take charge.Parents become blind in the love of their child- so even if the children rag, they turn a blind eye and save them, because they want to protect their child even if they are wrong.I rather be childless then have such children in future who do not respect other human being!

First lets not delude ourselves that this is ragging. It is planned assault with probable intent to kill and should be treated as such.Wake up. A news channel like yours can state that difference clearly while addressing this issue. Please do not skirt it. No one has the right to terrorise, humiliate or even stalk a student staying in a hostle or otherwise. That itself should be punishable. Next, the authorities in charge should be held fully accountable and responsible for the safety of students.No ifs no buts, no escape routes. Third make the atmosphere condusive for students to report ragging without fear of repurcussions and ACT ON IT. Ragging is NOT a right of passage ritual in college. It is NOT the birthright of the seniors to indulge in. Change attitudes and laws so that anyone practising ragging is expelled and shunned. As for punishments in the case of Aman - Death for the participating students and life for principal and warden booked as accessories to crime. Where is the debate?

I have also been a student in a professional college,and to be honest-i have always 'ragged' some of my juniors. But never once has it turned abusive,physical or humiliative.It lasts for around 5 mins after which we become really good pals.I am still in touch with most of my juniors in college and we share a special bond - almost like siblings.Any ragging that extends away from a friendly interaction should be treated like any other crime -with enough punishment.
Lets not leave Aman's brutal death be swallowed by the healing hands of time. May god give Aman's parents the strength.

Criminal

This is not ragging. It’s criminal activity. Although it’s been a decade since my college days, I do know for a fact that those who have very little to look forward to in life - either because they have too much of everything or have nothing at all, just like the terrorists, indulge in groupism, intimidation, physical and mental abuse. The college administration, instead of punishing them, is scared of these goons and actually does whatever they say at gun point. I have been through this and like Aman said, it’s not mere ragging-it’s humiliating, frustrating and leaves you helpless and scarred for life for no fault of yours. Smart, intelligent people are made fun of because it gives these good-for nothings one-upmanship. If professional colleges have to turn really professional, we need inspiring university heads not some nincompoops who are there because of political patronage. That’s the sorry state of India. Please watch Delhi6 to see what we are. The director has put it sensitively and subtly-that we are a beautiful people minus the black monkey in us. What a divine message! But sadly, like the callous cop in the movie, there are no honest public servants - only greedy, power hungry people backed by politicians. And if still the nation is not outraged, god save us. These are the burning issues not a temple here or a mosque there. Arise and awake citizens, before it’s too late. But sadly, where are the leaders who can inspire us. I’m still looking…

the warden and the principal should be charged:
once the complaint was filed and they didn't do any thing , they should be charged equally.
there should be ANTI RAGGING COMMITTEE IN EVERY STATE AND DIRECT CRIMINAL FILE PROCEDURE BECAUSE MANY TIMES THESE SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE RICH AND LOCALLY POWERFUL, SO SCHOOL AUTHORITY IS AFRAID TO TAKE DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

Aman Kachroo was murdered in the name of ragging.Despite the Supreme Court%u2019s strictures to colleges following the recommendations of the R.K.Raghavan Committee, ragging continues to claim young lives/destroy bright futures.It has assumed obnoxious and harmful connotations.Ragging today has assumed torturous, vulgar and inhuman forms that defy all norms of decency, morality and humanity. Over the years it was becoming clear that ragging in schools, colleges, universities (usually the residential ones) could be cloaked under the banner of %u201Cwelcoming the freshers%u201D, %u201C instilling discipline%u201D, %u201C building up team spirit%u201D, %u201Cmaking the student more worldly and sportive%u201D and as in institutions like National Defense Academy %u201Ctoughening up the cadets%u201D.Ragging has become a way of life, an accepted norm in our society.

Yes, ragging is the symptom of a deeper malaise in society.As a mother of a son who has been severely ragged in his school hostel I can relate to the pain of all those parents whose children have suffered the indignity of ragging. I am in the making of a 'Parents Forum' to fight the menace of ragging.I plan to form a forum comprising a group of ragged parents(?) who shall help in shooting letters to the concerned authorities namely: The National Human Rights Commission, concerned colleges, R.K.Raghavan Committee, the parents/guardians of the seniors who are ragging the freshers and if need arises we make a GD with the police.Parents Forum Against Ragging shall do the follow-up job to ensure that perpetrators of this crime are punished. The concerned seniors and the concerned institutions shall be held equally responsible for such criminal offense.
I feel that the parents of the freshers and the seniors have to be actively involved to combat this societal evil. We have been told that ragging is a necessity in order to break the ice between a fresher and a senior. But do they have to break bones to do that?
I invite suggestions and guidance to form this 'Parents Forum Against Ragging' and would like parents to join me in my effort to fight ragging and save our children from the indignity of being ragged.Aman's death can only be avenged with the stoppage of this heinous crime.

Individuals are free to to do whatever they like and may call such acts by whatever name they like. Ragging or any thing. But the moment any act transgress into the ambit of the INDIAN PENAL CODE or any other criminal law, their freedom ends and the IPC or other criminal laws applies to them ipso fact.

Where is the need of argument or debate. It becomes purely a matter of law and order. The state government and for that matter the central governments should be taken to task for such heinous crimes.

All those responsible for maintanenace of law and order should have been booked. The authorities who have kept their eyes shut on the compalint by the victim should also be booked under the same act.

By now not only two but many persons should have been put behind bars.

My suggestion to do away with the ragging is that "simply do away with the hostel system. Let the students make their own arrangement. This may provide a little impetus to private housing industries as well.

see what we should understand is the fact that-what happened with aman was not ragging, but physical assault in the name of ragging;
coz ragging to me and my friends is simple ice-breaking session between the freshers and seniors;
i belong to the "pre-ragging" era and i was ragged by my seniors. and as a result had some great times with them.... what we need to ban is not ragging on the whole but physical torture happening in the name of ragging!!!
