Will the Bofors ghost return to haunt the Congress in this election?

TimePosted by IBNLive at 07:04 PM, Apr 29, 2009 in IBNPolitics

The ghost of the Bofors scandal, refusing to die out, has reared its head in the midst of a heated poll battle. With the CBI reportedly having withdrawn the Red Corner Notice against Ottavio Quattrocchi - an Italian businessman accused in the Bofors gun deal - political parties are trying to derive mileage. While the Congress is confident that the latest controversy will not affect its prospects in the elections as the issue has been raked up once too often over the past two decades, the BJP has been vociferous in its demands that the CBI itself be investigated. Will the Bofors ghost hit the Congress' political fortunes?

The Bofors was almost dead but the Congress-led govt has given fresh life to it by withdrawing the Red Corner notice to Quattrochhi. It has revived the Bofor's controversy by giving room for criticism that it made use of the CBI for protecting 'Q'a close friend of Sonia.
This will certainly become an election issue and the Congress should blame itself for providing a topic for the opposition to attack the govt during election campaigns.
This might cost the Congress lot of votes.

Yes, because of the timing of CBI having withdrawn the notice against Quattrocchi, it will certainly change the political fortunes for the congress party.
