Will the Bofors ghost return to haunt the Congress in this election?

TimePosted by IBNLive at 07:04 PM, Apr 29, 2009 in IBNPolitics

The ghost of the Bofors scandal, refusing to die out, has reared its head in the midst of a heated poll battle. With the CBI reportedly having withdrawn the Red Corner Notice against Ottavio Quattrocchi - an Italian businessman accused in the Bofors gun deal - political parties are trying to derive mileage. While the Congress is confident that the latest controversy will not affect its prospects in the elections as the issue has been raked up once too often over the past two decades, the BJP has been vociferous in its demands that the CBI itself be investigated. Will the Bofors ghost hit the Congress' political fortunes?

I don't think it will really hurt the Congress for the following reason:

1. The vast rural majority of India (no disrespect to them) wouldn't even know about this and place too much emphasis on this

2. Also most of voting in certain parts of India is along caste lines

3. Most of the television and print media apart from a few magazines/channels which have some sense of neutrality give some relevance to this issue and also the real powerhouses behind this scam. They are more interested in sensational news like yuvaraj and maharaj being chic and getting certificates from half-cooked international leaders like Miliband.

It might affect a few undecided voters maybe in urban areas again dependent on how seriously media takes this information to him. Whilst I agree that this is being politicized by BJP (i guess any party would do this and no reason why they shouldn't), the crux of issue is the shamelessness of the Cong govt. in repeatedly misusing central agencies to their benefit (remember the clean chit to tytler a month back, then Q a week or so back n twist in cases against Mulayam n Mayawati. I hear Ajmal Kasav is next in line - there might be no sufficient evidence against him too now that he has pleaded not guilty.)

But what tops them all is our clean Prime minister acting like a stooge of the royal family of India in calling India's case shameful. I lost all respect for this man during cash for votes scam and now he is only making me feel vindicated. Mr. Singh, shame on you for what you said. What you said is no better than what Varun said as you discredited our own national agencies for a family.

Hope the media can act more responsibly and not become another stooge of this family of seemingly chic politicians.

Congress party pressurized CBI to close the case of disproportionate assets against Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav, Head of Samajwadi Party when the boat of present coalition government was sinking due to withdrawal of support by Left.
Now when SP is supposed no more possible ally after the result, the same congress party is contemplating of reopening of CBI case against Mulayam.
They shamelessly speak that law will take its own course of action after committing each rape of judiciary and CBI

PM Mr. Manmohan Singh admits that Quotrachi was unnecessarily tortured for last 25 years; He says further “Evidences against him are not enough”. This conclusion has been arrived at after sincere and hard labour made by Investigating authorities, CBI and other government agencies efforts.
Will Indian government compensate Quotrachi for unwarranted harassment as accepted by PM openly?

VP Singh, pioneer in leveling charges of corruption against Rajiv Gandhi in Bofors deal case admitted after 25 years that Rajiv Gandhi was not involved in Bofors payoff case.

Who will compensate for the mental harassment Rajiv undergone during his life time?
Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar have been acquitted after 25 years by CBI. Will CBI or police authorities compensate Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar for humiliation they faced in the society?

What does it tell about integrity and seriousness of CBI?

And the very question is that if such VIPs are declared innocent after 25 years of torturous investigation and unbearable mental harassment meted out to the alleged person for such a long period, what use to happen with common man in the Indian courts and how much are they tortured for no reason by investigating agencies may very well be imagined.

Is it congress style of handling CBI?

Do you still treat Manmohan Singh as able and honest person when he justify the release of Quotarechi,Jagdish Tytler,Sajjan Kumar?

Do you still treat Manmohan Singh as honest politicians who still expect to form government with the support of Left parties to whom he has been abusing and blaming along with Ms Mamta Banerjee of Trinamul Congress Party for poverty and backwardness of West Bengal?

How to punish leaders of RJD,LJP,SP,LF, JD(U),PMK or any other party who have been abusing Congress party for all lapses before the election result join again Congress party for formation of the government after the result .

Will you not blame President of India for allowing such Girgits (animal which frequently change colour) to form government against the verdict of election and against the desire of voters?

do you think so, the congress timed it too well. Its just before the elections were over. Only phase 4 is remaining. How will it affect the vote that much? I think it took the step in fear that it might not be coming into power that easily.

In any case a well judged move. The BJP is now saying so many things, it souldnt develop a good case when it was in power so why shout out now? Every party in power will do for its own benefit.

Sadly the citizens think they are not affected by all these, and al this is bade logon ki baat, the least they realise its out money they are playing with.

Not at all. Whenever there is allegation from Congress circles on the non-congress parties, such issues are takenup although however, their leadership has vested interests in the Bofors deal.

I am really disappointed with the CBI and all enquiry commission which are appointed to reveal the truth and the guilty is punished.Police acts from the direction of the state Govt and the CBI acts on the behest of Centre. Now all the courts are corrupted.Where do you go for justice. I think unless media is active the Bofors ghost will continue to haunt congress and the people looking for justice.

The BJP has no issue but such 25 year old scandals. Why did the BJP not do anything about this when it was in power? They just need to bring out issues of no consequence to the Nation.

An educated Voter remembers that the Nations defence was compromised by escorting terrorists to Kandhahar. Not by the Bofors Gun which is one of the most potent and efficient pieces of our Armour even today.
And spending Rs 250 crores in 25 years to unravel a supposed commision of Rs. 64 crores( USD 13 million) hardly makes sense to an educated voter.

so, should the people have left off to their own fate during Kandahar.even the congress left off militants just for one lady of Kashmir that day.and the defamed gun may be used still now but there were inefficient pieces many pieces.the amount of money mentioned is only due to the the inefficiency (better said as an attempt to save Q)if they dint do things like taking off Interpol we would have arrested him by now

The Nation has spoken and the BJP has learnt that the Nation has moved on with new priorities. Time they stopped raking in mandir/bofors issues. No one is interested.

In 1987, when the expose first surfaced, it would have been a shock to the people when a leader of Rajiv Gandhi was accused of corruption. But now, people are used to corruption, and scams seldom swing votes.

But what may swing a few votes in a few states is the arrogance of the Congress in letting Mr.Q get away just before the elections. Is Mr.Q so important to the Gandhi family? Does the Italian connection need to be probed? Yes, but probably not by the CBI. That would be like inmates running the asylum, in my opinion.

On a different note, why let Q or Tytler get away now? If they are so sure of winning the elections, they could do this after the elections, without having to worry about votes. Maybe they aren't so sure of their victory as a Jayanti Natrajan or Digvijay Singh might say on TV.
