UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday inaugurated the gleaming new $325 million bridge, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, which has been named after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi is Rajiv's widow. The Congress, which recently slammed UP CM Mayawati's move of building her own statues, does not seem to be practising what it has been preaching. Should the Congress have named Mumbai's new architectural marvel after the former PM?

There is nothing more left over to name and hence new projects taken to name them after the great Nehru's family, it is not far away to change the name of the states from Rajasthan to Rajivsthan and country India to Indira.
Why should we name the airports, ports and roads after political leaders? Can't we call Hyderabad International Airport instead of calling it Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

William Shakespeare once wrote the famous line - Whats in a name ...without anticipating the relevance it would have in the Indian Political Scenario ! Once again our so called babus of our political world have created an imbroglio ...Instead of focussing on Progress ! Where were all these big wigs when the every other place in then, BOMBAY now MUMBAI, was named after Shivaji....surprisingly for a change the sena did not root for renaming the link as CS-BWSL. It boggles me, that people who are elected or wannabe elected candidates raise ruckus for no reason at all. Should there be any controversy...I dont think so...but then how would these issue- scavengers survive ? Till then...let the rose be called by any other name...as long as the fragrance remains. My message to the babu's and sena's of our world....Please do continue with your Nonsensical tirades till the time, we the people put up with it.....

I cannot understand the reason why anything and everything from a bridge to a toilet to a stadium to a road project has to be named after a Gandhi or Nehru. Some may say it is about respecting former PMs, but why has Lal Bahadur Shastri, PVN left behind? More over don't we have any other leader that the country has seen? Why Rajiv Gandhi? Was he the visionary of this project? Why not Bal Gangadhar Tilak?

The Mumbai sea link must be named after some historical or cultural personality, saint or revolutionary leader. It is sad to see our political leaders forgetting the heritage and relying on the old names for vote bank, considering elections are in a couple of months in the state. More sad is to see the name of a Gandhi coming out of sychophancy. A proper name must be discussed among the political parties as this sea link is national property and not a property of Congress or UPA. Even I disliked the idea of inaugural by Sonia Gandhi. It makes more sense to get something like this inaugurated by some official goverment authority (though I understand that Mrs. Gandhi is unofficially a government itself ;)).

Why not name it after the brave hero from Kerela who fell to terrorist's bullets on 26/11.

It has always been the practice of ruling Congress party to name all important places in Maharashtra in the name of Gandhi and Nehru family, be it international airport, port, parks etc. Now, the latest move has been to name the Sea link. Just look at the other metros, their respective states have been demanding the names of the famous persons, freedom fighters, local heroes for all such important places. Best examples are use of Subhashchandra Bose in Calcutta, use of Kamraj in Chennai and so on. But, the leaders of Maharashtra especially in Congress seems to have no respect for their own local leaders and heroes. They always bow down to Delhi pressure. It has been the practice followed for years. So, what more do you expect from them ? By the way, what is the contribution of Rajeev Gandhi to the city of Mumbai ?
It is always the case that someone who is the person behind construction of this bridge is left behind and somebody else takes the credit while inaugurating. Atleast, Mr. Gadkari, the man behind the move should have been invited. It was also surprising to notice that the Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, Police Commissioner of Mumbai and the mayor of Mumbai were not seen during the ceremony. It was all unwantd crowd on the dais. It was all crowd of unwanted faces who always bow down before their party President. So, you one imagine the circumstances under which the name of rajeev gandhi has been proposed.
If Veer Savarkar's name was not acceptable to the ruling party, they could have very well considered the names of Jamshedji Tata, Aditya Birla, Jagannath Shankar Seth,Dhirubhai Ambani or even Walchand Hirachand. the last name would have certainly made Ajit Gulabchand happy for being a family member of walchand family and getting the satisfaction of his company's efforts in constructing the bridge. But, the policy of Congress does not recognise the contributions of such people.

People are counted only at the time of elections and not after that. Congress seems to be very good in understanding this.

No.....
No bridge should be named after any politicians. It should be given some Unique Name which suits its functionality. For Bandra-Worli Bridge, it should be given the Name as "Bandra-Worli Bridge", so simple as that.
If u give bridge name under any politicians, other party's will have problem.Like here Shiv Sena has problem naming it after Rajiv Gandhi.

Dear Viral Gandhi
I agree. Why give names to structures? Call them for their practical use like in this case "The Bandra-Worli Bridge". Keep politicians out of the naming issue because today its one party tomorrow another and so on.

NO WAY.
Why should everything in our country.....from airports to highways to roads to as many institutes & even parks....be named ONLY after NEHRU, Indira Gandhi & Rajiv Gandhi?
We have as many memorials after their names in every nook & corner of the country.
By the by, one shud recollect that when once the late Rajiv Gandhi visited Mumbai, he had very generously announced a package of " Rs.100 crores" for Dharavi area development. And I am sure not even a portion of this amount got really sanctioned or physically received!
Are there no other worthy leaders in our nation to name the landmarks after?
In fact why ever name any landmark after anyone? Just leave it as Bandra-Worli sea link! After all like so many old places which had been renamed after "unpronouncable names", are always referred to by these old names only, by the people!

It is an insult to the rest of the country's prolific statesmen. I wonder is the Nehru-Gandhi solely responsible for development of this country? What about the TATAs' who built bombay, what about Tilak, and many others who have contributed to development of the economic capital. Although name won't make any difference but it just goes to show feudal system is not dead in this country... Democracy is not accepting any dynasty to rule the commons, be it foreign or domestic. Congress leaders only to impress their Delhi lordships must not indulge in silently mutating the history of the nation, by ignoring the contributions from other leaders. Sanjay Gandhi Hospitals, Rajiv Gandhi University, Nehru University, and what not... If chamchagiri is the order of the day for congress leadership it is fine for them... but not for the rest of the country.

Just what is Congress trying to convey with naming each and every project after Congress leaders like Indira, Sanjay and Rajiv Gandhi? I have heard there is a Indira Gandhi "Shouch"(translates to public toilets) Yojana in Rajasthan [Source - Article in Vijaya Karnataka, Bangalore]. Isnt this blatant exploitation of power? Isnt this behavior deplorable? Nehru's name can atleast be justified as he was a freedom fighter as well. But that doesnt mean you label every project after him too. What moral right does congress have in questioning Mayawati's statues in UP? There should be a complete reversal of this naming through govt order. Instead we should give the name of freedom fighters and the name of the people who have strived socially for such projects..

Giving due respect to Rajiv Gandhi i don't think we need to name each and every object in this country after him or his mother or his grand father ! Rather dedicated this to Sandeep Unnikrishnan and other NSG commandos who gave up there life to save the people of this city (I am confident that SS and MNS would object to it as these commandos are not marathi), I Known that I am asking for too much, it is a shame that our politicians will never change and as usual they are back in to there old skins hardly after 8 months of 26/11 !!
I surrender this to the fate of this country and its people !!!!
