Should the Mumbai sea link have been named after Rajiv Gandhi? | Read Story

TimePosted by IBNLive at 07:01 PM, Jun 30, 2009 | Updated at 12:43 PM, Jul 01, 2009 in India

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday inaugurated the gleaming new $325 million bridge, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, which has been named after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi is Rajiv's widow. The Congress, which recently slammed UP CM Mayawati's move of building her own statues, does not seem to be practising what it has been preaching. Should the Congress have named Mumbai's new architectural marvel after the former PM?

This Bandra-Worli sea link should have been named after some Maharastrian leader who has helped to develop the city/state. There are enough roads and monuments named after late Rajiv Gandhi.

Leave it as 'sea-link'....short and sweet...easy to use..."We reach faster via sea-link" better than "we reach faster via the Rajiv Gandhi bridge" quite a mouthful, isn't it?

it seems that the various political parties rather than on concentrating on the main woes of the general public is indirectly trying to far-spread their ideals by naming the so called eng marvels of modern india by naming them after the persons whom they find best suited as representive of their party ideals.
if they argue of showing respect to the late rajiv ji they already have done so by naming major educational institutes after him.

I read some one suggesting 'Mumbai's Leap over sea". Good one. It reflects the 'spirit' Mumbaikars have shown during the terorist attacks, during the communal problems and during rainy seasons too.

Well thats on paper, I think people would still call it the "sea link", or the bandra-worli bridge after all.
I think thats the best reply, let them name it, just dont use it.

I think the bridge should NOT be named after any politician/freedom fighter or hero. Its an engineering marvel and can be identified as Sea Link Bridge...if at all politicians can't identify it (can't blame their memory) then lets name it "Mumbai Sea Link (MSL)" honoring the spirit of this great city.

Politicians should not force their political wishes on us rather they should listen to ours. If they really care they should go democratic way...take a poll to see what the bridge should be named...what say :)

Another thought..There would be hundreds of roads, streets and chowks named after historical figures and political leaders but I don't remember a single one named after the planner or cheif engineer who came up with that idea or made it possible. Lets not forget thousands of engineers and workers who have worked for past 10 years to make this marvel. Thank you HCC and other construction partners.

Back to the name game...there are hundreds of chowks and roads named after a historical/political figure but there is one and only one MUMBAI on this planet earth. Also there is Vashi Bridge, Airoli Bridge, Mumbai-Pune Expressway...on the same lines let it be Mumbai Sea Link. lets pay a tribute to the great spirit of Mumbai and Mumbaikars.

(my first post on this topic didn't get posted hope the editor/moderator would let this one thru)

Current Rating:

To be Frank I personnaly feel that there is absolutely no sense in naming Sea link after Our late PM Rajiv Gandhi. Its a name that has become saturated in every major city and throughout entire nation.
To name a few....Hyd's new airport was named after him and surprisingly Hyd Uppal Stadium that was formerly known as Visaka Stadium was also later named after him.
When it was clearly mentioned in the contract that the Stadium will be named after the highest investor, which was Visaka Industries, Congress soon after taking charge of the office at HYD didnt bother to respect the piece of paper and eventually Visaka had to bow out silently(Infact the name Visaka Cricket Stadium stood out for few months before elctions when TDP was at power)
But everyone wondered has the Govt paid anything in return because it was mentioned in the clause that any violation of the contents can cause Govt to pay four times the amount invested.
Satyam's flagship welfare service "108" was named as Rajiv Gandhi Arogyasri Scheme.
But Never in the history of Congress govt in AP....Our telugu pride Late PM PV Narasimha Rao was remebered even though he was a congress led govt PM!!
I find no difference between UP CM Mayawati and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi with the exception that the former is trying to brand herself while the latter is trying to brand her legacy!!

CANT THE INC THINK BEYOND THE GANDHI DYNASTY?

the link should be named after our brave NSG commandos and police personnel who sacrificed their lives on 26/11. Enough of Gandhi mania.

Rajdeep,
Can you please ask the MPs if Congress is all about the Gandhis?
