Sone (Bihar): Goriya Pandey turned social norms upside down at her wedding: She took the baraat (wedding procession) to her groom’s home to tie the knot.

Goria lives in one of the poorest villages in Rohtas, one of the most backward districts in Bihar and a place where women go strictly by what men ask them to do.

Goria’s father, a drunkard, wanted the groom’s family to give him money. When he was shown the door, he took away the baraat back home.

He thought nothing about Goria, so she decide take charge of her own and the wedding too. “(Is me papa ka rai nahi tha. Hum apne mann hi se kiye shadi.) ,” says Goriya. (My father did not have any say in the matter. I married according to my wish)

Goria’s village were by her side when she marched to her groom’s home. “ Un dono ko shadi karne se mana kar diya. Uske baad ye log wapas chale aaye apne gaon. Uske baad ladki ke parijan uskei bhai bahan jij log lekar aaye aur shadi dum dham se hui,” says Villager Abhay Pandey. (They refused them to get married. After that they returned back to their village. Then bride’s relatives, brother and sister came here and the wedding took place.”)

Her husband Bhagwan Pandey says: “Baraat gaya laut aaya. Is garibi halat mei gaon ke log layee. Gaon pura madad kiya shadi karne ke liye. (The baraat went away and then returned. In this state of poverty, we got help from the villagers, who brought the baraat back. The village helped a lot in getting the wedding done.”
