New Delhi, May 30 (PTI) Twelve children working in Shellac handicraft manufacturing units were today rescued by authorities from central Delhi. The raid was conducted by police, labour department officials and activists of child rights NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) in LNJP colony of Daryaganj. The children were trafficked from Katihar in Bihar and were being forced to work for 12-15 hours a day, a BBA official said, adding that children as young as 8 years were working in the units. "These children were working in badly lit, ill- ventilated and damp cubicles of 6'X6' size. These cubicles are their kitchen, sleeping room as well as workplace. All these children bear wound marks on their body," he said. R S Chaurasia, Chairperson, BBA, said the material used in manufacturing these products include very poisonous chemicals."A substance used to give a shine to the products was found smeared all over the bodies of these children. They are in an appalling state. Their swollen eyes and the numerous skin infections on their bodies is testimony to the long hours of work and exploitation by the employers," he said.
