AIUDF legislator threatens stir if NH 44 not repaired soon
PTI | 05:01 PM,Jan 30,2012Karimganj, Jan 30 (PTI) AIUDF MLA Moulana Ataur Rahman Majharbhuiya today threatened to re-launch his stir for immediate repair of the NH-44 connecting Assam's Barak Valley, Tripura and Manipur with the rest of the country. Accusing PWD Minister Ajanta Neog of failing to keep her assurance to assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi to look into the matter, Majharbhuiya threatened to restart the agitation if demands including widening the road into four lanes between Shillong by-pass and Churaibari on the Assam-Tripura border were not met immediately. Talking to reporters, Ataur Rahman said his party had set up a steering committee to meet in the first week of February to chalk out the next course of agitation. The Moulana also sought the intervention of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on four laning of the road. The two-time "All India United Democratic Front" MLA from Katigorah has hit the headlines in the last two years for regularly staging 'dharna' and fasts for renovation of the arterial National Highway, lying in a pathetic condition for a long time. On the eve of the assembly's last winter session, he sat on a dharna at Kalain under Cachar district where he threatened to go on a hunger strike in front of the House during the session in support of his demands. Speaker Pranab Gogoi intervened and asked the PWD Minister to convene a joint meeting of various government agencies entrusted with construction of the road in the first week of January. Ataur alleged that Neog had failed to keep her promise to the Speaker as no such meeting had been held so far to sort out the issue. The MLA of the single largest opposition party in the assembly also accused the Congress government of failing to give importance to the Barak Valley. Though 13 of the 15 Assembly seats in the Valley were won by the Congress, the ruling party had shown little concern for development of the National Highways here, Ataur said.
