

Approval to stone quarries against compliance of safety norms
PTI | 10:08 PM,Aug 25,2010Kolkata, Aug 25 (PTI) The West Bengal government today said approval for stone quarries in Birbhum district would be allowed only after complying with environment and safety conservation norms."Only six stone quarries have been given approval by the government after compliance with environment and safety conservation norms," Home Secretary Samar Ghosh said here today.After a high-level meeting convened by the Chief Secretary Ardhendu Sen, Ghosh said that WBIDC Director Manish Jain would leave for Suri in Birbhum district tomorrow to review the situation where illegal stone quarry was banned for the last two months following protest by local people during a visit by the Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.A district-level committee has been set up to assess the compliance report before recommending approval.
