

Attempt to poach leopard in UP
PTI | 10:07 PM,Jul 31,2010Lakhimpur (UP), July 31 (PTI) Unidentidfied poachers attempted to kill a young leopard in highly protected Kishunpur Sanctuary of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, official sources said here today. The poachers set up an iron clamp used to capture the leopard whose left fore-leg was clamped into the trap, they said. The patrolling Kishunpur Sanctuary staff came to know of the incident when the leopard roared this morning. Deputy Director, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, Sanjay Kumar Pathak, along with the staff of the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation. The park and the WTI experts tranquilized and encaged the trapped leopard on Saturday afternoon and released it from the trap, said Pathak.He said the leopard suffered injuries in its left fore-leg. "A thorough examination of the injured leopard would be carried out and after the injuries were healed, the leopard would be released into the forests again," Pathak said.He said efforts were being made to identify those who had laid the trap for the leopard.
