Cairo, Jan 22 (PTI) A leader of the Muslim Brotherhood's party is poised to become the speaker of Egypt's parliament after it won 47 per cent seats in the country's the first polls since the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak, nearly a year ago. The Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), which represents the Brotherhood won 235 seats in the 498-member House, a stunning reversal of fortunes for a movement banned under ousted President. The party approved its secretary general Mohamed Saad al-Katatny's resignation as he is expected to become People's Assembly Speaker. The Egyptian Supreme Elections Committee has announced the final results of the phased elections last night which brought no new surprises as the Muslim Brotherhood's FJP remained in the lead. This is the first time the Muslim Brotherhood has reached power since its creation in the early 1920s. The ultra-conservative Salafi-oriented Nour Party is in second place with 121 seats or nearly 25 per cent, while the liberal Wafd Party follows with nearly nine per cent, Elections Committee head Abdel Moez Ibrahim said. The FJP secured 127 seats on party lists and its candidates won another 108, according to the results announced. The Muslim Brotherhood held meeting with the parties which came second and third in the elections, the Salafi Nour Party and the liberal Al-Wafd, to agree on who is to be named speaker of the parliament. The talks also included head of the liberal Egyptian Social Democratic party Mohammad Abu-al-Ghar. The meeting resulted in an agreement on naming al-Katatny as the coming assembly speaker and nominees from the parties ranking second and third will occupy the posts of the two deputy speakers.
