

''By-polls in Telangana''s 12 Assembly segments held peacefully''
PTI | 10:07 PM,Jul 27,2010Hyderabad, Jul 27 (PTI) By-elections in 12 Assembly constituencies in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh today passed off peacefully, barring minor incidents of altercation, Andhra Pradesh Director-General of Police R R Girish Kumar said here. "The by-polls went off peacefully in 12 Assembly constituencies, though some minor incidents that of altercation has been reported from Sirpur and Chennur Assembly constituencies. No cases have been booked against anybody in this regard," the DGP told reporters here. "Right from the date of announcement of election notification we have taken necessary steps for conduct of elections in a free and fair manner," Girish Kumar said adding police seized huge cash of Rs 3.5 crore during surprise searches while as many 1,943 cases were registered for illegal manufacturing, sale and distribution of illicit liquor and over 1,000 belt shops were closed.Special forces, which were deployed in Naxal-prone areas of Adilabad and Karimnagar districts, have been carrying out combing operations in the area for the past 15 days. This apart, adequate police forces were deployed in all the areas where by-polls were held, he said. The top cop complimented the police personnel for peaceful conduct of the elections.
