Addressing the conference of the Aizawl district congress committee, Lal Thanhawla said the meeting of the CCEA, chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, made the decision on 'Comprehensive and Integrated Socio-Economic Development Project of Mizoram government under NLUP'. Lal Thanhawla said while Centre was satisfied with the project and wanted it to be implemented in the whole country 'they were in favour of its first experimentation in the Christian-dominated state.' The land-based programme was designed to do away with jhumming (slash-and-burn way of shifting cultivation) in the state and to create permanent and remunerative livelihhood for the farmers, besides preservation of environment. The target is to increase the overall state economic growth from the present 6 per cent to 16 per cent within ten years.
