PTI | 06:12 PM,Dec 20,2011Gangtok, Dec 20 (PTI) Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today called for an inquiry into the bridge collapse on Dikchu-Mangan highway in East district. Condoling the deaths, the CM called for immediate probe into yesterday's incident of the collapse of the Rangchang Bridge at Singtam Mangan Highway when a 48-wheeler trailer truck, loaded with heavy machineries, mounted on it, and early submission of reports. Chamling also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 1 lakh each to the next of kin of victims and Rs. 20,000 each for those having received injury. While three bodies were recovered, seven others were suspected to have been crushed under the trailer when it fell as the bridge, constructed recently by a private firm engaged by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), gave way suddenly. The ten persons were six occupants of the truck, two other Teesta Urja employees coordinating its safe passage across the bridge and two locals crossing the bridge. The vehicle was on its way to North Sikkim. Barely a week ago, six tourists from West Bengal were killed in an accident on the same Dikchu-Mangan highway in North Sikkim.
