

Child labour: Govt asked to take penal steps against employers
PTI | 08:04 PM,Apr 27,2011New Delhi, Apr 27 (PTI) The city government was today ordered by the Delhi High Court to initiate stringent penal measures against factories, restaurants and other establishments employing child labourers.A division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked the authorities to impose a hefty penalty of Rs 20,000 per child labourer recovered from any such establishment, besides cancelling the licences of erring factories and restaurants as per the provisions of the Abolition of Child Labour Act.The court also directed the city government's Labour Department and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to widely publicise various stringent penal provisions of the Act against those employing children.The high court's direction came during hearing of a petition by NGO, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, pointing out the rampant malady of child labour employment in the Capital.The petitioner had approached the high court after some of its activists, while rescuing some child labourers from some factories in east Delhi, were attacked by local goons on March 17.The activists were attacked when they went to some factories and other establishments to rescue children along with a sub-divisional magistrate without adequate police protection.
