

CMs to take part in workshop on agri policy conveneved by Prez
PTI | 08:02 PM,Feb 13,2012New Delhi, Feb 13 (PTI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Ministers of various states will deliberate on new initiatives for rainfed and dryland farming on February 15 at a workshop convened by President Pratibha Patil here. The one-day workshop on policy initiatives for promoting partnership between stakeholders in agriculture "with particular reference to rainfed and dry land farming" will open with Patil's inaugural address at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The other expected participants include Union Ministers Pranab Mukherjee, Sharad Pawar, Veerappa Moily, Praful Patel, Jairam Ramesh, K V Thomas and Kishore Chandra Deo and Chief Ministers like Ashok Gehlot, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Raman Singh and Tarun Gogoi. "During the one-day workshop, four sessions will be held. The first will be on policy initiatives to remove factors impeding rapid growth in rainfed/dryland farming. The session will be chaired by the Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra. "The second session shall be on knowledge management for sustainable agriculture. The session shall be chaired by the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh. The third session will be on farmer-industry partnership- a paradigm shift for integrated growth in rainfed farming. This session will be chaired by the Union Minister of Corporate Affairs Veerappa Moily," a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said. The last session shall be on farmer's organisations' key to partnership- need for policy initiatives. The session will be chaired by the Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the spokesperson added. "The workshop is subsequent to a similar session of Governors that was convened by the President last year. The deliberations during that session will be taken forward and discussed," the spokesperson added. Rajasthan and Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil, who is the chairman of the Governors panel, is also expected to present his views on the topic. The other participants include Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, officials from the IFFCO, Vice-Chancellors of agricultural universities, representatives of private companies and entrepreneurs and other allied agriculture related organisations.
