PTI | 02:08 PM,Aug 26,2011Tokyo, Sept 8 (Kyodo) Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda is exploring the possibility of visiting China as early as in the first half of October, a move welcomed by China. If the visit takes place, Noda, who became Japan's leader last Friday, is expected to hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao or Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing and agree to strengthen bilateral relations based on common strategic interests, the sources said. But it remains uncertain whether Noda's visit will be organised smoothly as a large part of the premier's political schedule is still unfixed and also some officials in China have a sense of unease regarding his understanding of wartime history. In August, Noda said he believes Japan's wartime leaders, convicted by an Allied tribunal at the end of World War II, were not war criminals. He has also voiced concerns over China's military buildup and its growing assertiveness in territorial disputes. "Nothing has been decided and we have yet to consult on anything" on such a plan with China, a senior official at the Japanese Foreign Ministry said on condition of anonymity. Japan and China have agreed on regular reciprocal mutual visits by their leaders. This year, it is the Japanese prime minister's turn to visit China. On Tuesday, Noda talked by phone with Wen for the first time since he took office. After the conversation, Japanese officials said Wen invited him to visit China at an early date, and Noda said he wants to do so at a mutually convenient time. In late 2010, relations between the two countries deteriorated to their lowest level in years over collisions involving a Chinese fishing boat and Japanese patrol boats near the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. The islands, which China calls the Diaoyu, have been administrated by Japan for decades but are claimed by Beijing. The collisions, which led to the arrest of a Chinese captain, occurred exactly one year ago. This October will mark the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution, which is viewed as the start of China's modernization, and next year marks the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties between Japan and China.(Kyodo)
