Dharamshala, May 10 (PTI) The Dalai Lama has been awarded two honorary doctorate degrees in just a couple of days by US universities. Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, yesterday honoured the Tibetan spiritual leader with a doctorate degree for his "lifelong leadership in promoting peace, compassion and inter-religious understanding," the Tibetan government-in-exile said today. On Sunday, University of Minnesota awarded Dalai Lama with 'Doctor of Humane Letters'. Gerald Turner, president of South Methodist University, described the spiritual leader as an inspiration for millions and said the Nobel laureate is recognised for his concern for global environmental problems. In his thanks giving message, Dalai Lama said the honour is a great encouragement for an individual passing through a difficult period with heavy responsibility. He also acknowledged the presence of Laura Bush, wife of former US President George W Bush in the audience. Speaking on the electoral reforms undertaken in the Tibetan community, Dalai Lama said his decision to devolve authority to the elected Tibetan leadership is his total dedication to democracy. He praised the US and Bush for supporting the struggle of Tibetans. PTI CORR
